Gustav von Lerchenfeld

Gustav Freiherr von Lerchenfeld (born May 30, 1806 in Ulm , † October 10, 1866 in Berchtesgaden ) was royal councilor and landowner of Heinersreuth. He was the eldest son of the future Bavarian Finance Minister Maximilian Emanuel von Lerchenfeld (1778–1843).

Life

After graduating from high school in Munich in 1822 , he studied law at the universities of Würzburg , Heidelberg and Munich . He was a member of the Germania Würzburg fraternity . After graduating in 1828, he went to the Rhine Palatinate , where he learned about French procedural law. From 1830 to 1841 he worked as a judge in Landau and Frankenthal . In 1841 he became an appellate judge in Bamberg . The estate he inherited from his father enabled him to retire from civil service on December 31, 1843 and to devote himself to historical and political studies in addition to managing the estate.

Political activities

Since 1845 he was a member of the Chamber of Deputies as a member of the aristocratic landowners with jurisdiction. He was a leading financial politician and budget officer from 1845 to 1866. He was leader of the opposition to the ministry of Karl von Abel . After the March riots in 1848 he became finance minister, later also interior minister, but resigned on December 19, 1848.

Von Lerchenfeld was elected by the Bavarian Chamber of Deputies in 1849 , but was only appointed 2nd President by the King. Therefore he renounced this position. He was the leader of the liberal majority in the Chamber and a supporter of the Greater German solution to German unification.

He died of an accident in the Kolowratshöhle on the Untersberg , in which he fell on September 29, 1866 when a wooden staircase failed.

Honors

In his honor was in Munich the Lerchenfeldstraße named.
