Gustav Otto Graf Douglas ( Russian Густав Отто Дуглас ; Swedish Gustaf Otto Douglas ; * February 23, 1687 in Stockholm ; † January 22, July / February 2,  1771 greg. In Reval ) was a Russian general and governor .

Life

Origin and family

Gustav Otto was a member of the Swedish line of the Scottish Douglas dynasty . His parents were the Swedish colonel and governor of Västerbotten Gustaf Graf Douglas (1648–1705) and Beata Margareta, née Countess Stenbock (1661–1735).

He married in Reval in 1715 with Helena Freiin von Schlippenbach (1700–1767), a daughter of the Russian major general Wolmar Anton von Schlippenbach (1653–1739) and Helena, née Freiin von Liven († 1727). The marriage resulted in two daughters and two sons.

Career

Douglas began his career in the Swedish military as a sergeant in the life guards . He then switched to French services in the meantime , where he advanced to captain . In December 1703 served in the Upplands Femmäninngar Infantry Regiment again with the Swedes. There he rose 1,704 to second lieutenant , 1705 to first lieutenant , 1706 to lieutenant commander and finally in 1708 the body Trabant on. In the Battle of Poltava he was taken prisoner by the Russians.

It was not until 1714 that he entered the Russian service as a colonel and that same year he became governor-general in Finland , which he remained until 1719. He was then from 1721 President of the Grand Commission in Estonia and received his promotion to major general in 1725 and lieutenant general in 1729 . In 1733 he had to answer to the court martial, was awarded the Alexander Nevsky Order in 1734 and was transferred to the Polish corps without command in 1735. He represented Lacy as Commander-in-Chief in 1738 and finally became General en Chef himself in June of that year . Also in 1738 he took the position of Governor General in Estonia , which he remained until 1740. Douglas received his departure in 1751.

He was the hereditary lord of the Estonian estates Alp and Kuckofer and an Estonian district administrator .
