Gustavo Martínez Frías (born May 30, 1935 in Bucaramanga , Santander , Colombia , † August 29, 2009 in Cúcuta , Norte de Santander ) was Archbishop of Nueva Pamplona .

Life

Gustavo Martínez Frías studied philosophy and theology at the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana in Bogotá from 1954 to 1960 and was ordained a priest for the diocese of Socorro y San Gil on November 27, 1960 . He was Professor of Philosophy and Theology at the Seminary in San Gil, as well as Prefect and Vice Chancellor. He was also Episcopal Vicar of the Ecclesiastical Province of San Gil and Vicar General of the Diocese of Socorro y San Gil.

In 1987 he was appointed Bishop of the Diocese of Ipiales by Pope John Paul II . He was ordained bishop on February 20, 1987, by the Archbishop of Bucaramanga, Héctor Rueda Hernández ; Co- consecrators were the Archbishop of Ibagué, José Joaquín Flórez Hernández , and the Archbishop of Popayán, Samuel Silverio Buitrago Trujillo CM.

Pope John Paul II appointed him Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Nueva Pamplona in 1999 .
