The Gymnaestrada 2007 , also World Gymnaestrada 2007 (officially: 13th World Gymnaestrada 2007 Dornbirn ) took place from July 8th to July 14th 2007 in Dornbirn in the Austrian state of Vorarlberg . Around 22,000 active gymnasts and their companions from 53 countries took part. The World Gymnaestrada 2007 was marked by the intense participation of the population and the approximately 4,000 volunteers.

The world gymnastics games held every four years by the FIG (Fédération Internationale de Gymnastique) are known as the World Gymnaestrada . The grounds of the Dornbirn trade fair and the Birkenwiese stadium in the Schoren district served as central nodes and meeting points for the 2007 World Gymnaestrada . The large group performances took place in the Lustenauer Reichshofstadion .

Around 350 so-called city ​​performances were planned in the eight communities of Höchst, Hard, Bregenz, Wolfurt, Dornbirn, Hohenems, Rankweil and Feldkirch. These were performed on outdoor stages and lasted around three to five hours per performance. The opening ceremony and the final event took place in the Birkenwiese stadium. For this purpose, the stadium was expanded to a capacity of 30,000 visitors using mobile standing stands.

Nation Villages

During the Gymnaestrada, Dornbirn was the focus of the action. In addition, the representatives of numerous countries were housed in various communities in Vorarlberg. The 53 nations were spread over a total of 23 nation villages, in which up to 4,000 volunteers took care of them. Cultural festivals were planned in the host communities in order to familiarize the guests with their own customs and traditions and to give them the opportunity to introduce themselves and their country to a closer look. The athletes and their companions were accommodated in hotels, schools and other public institutions.

Investments

In addition to private investments, especially in the tourism sector, the approaching World Gymnaestrada also attracted public interest. The ÖBB invested several million euros in the renovation of the Dornbirn Central Station (30.86 million euros) as well as the renovation and expansion of existing stations Dornbirn-Schoren (9.98 million euros), Hatlerdorf (2 million euros) and Riedenburg (4, 9 million euros). In addition, the state of Vorarlberg and the municipality of Dornbirn renovated and rebuilt the athletics hall (2.3 million euros) on the grounds of the Dornbirn trade fair, the state sports center (3.2 million euros) and the ball sports hall in Dornbirn (6.3 million euros). The Austrian Armed Forces supported the event in setting up the grandstands in the Dornbirn exhibition center and in the Birkenwiese stadium.
