geography
Hügelheim is located in Breisgau and Markgräflerland , about 26 kilometers southwest of Freiburg . The Upper Rhine Plain meets the foothills of the Black Forest here . The slopes inclined to the west are largely covered with grapevines; the plain is characterized by fields and meadows. The plain is irrigated by the Hügelheimer Runs, an artificially created watercourse that is fed by the Klemmbach . The Hügelheim district covers about 7.95 km² including 45 hectares of Rhine forest near Zienken and 200 hectares of mountain forest between Schweighof and the Sirnitz Pass. In the east of the Hügelheim area above the grapevines there is a restricted area that is used by the Franco-German Brigade .
history
Hügelheim appears for the first time in 1101 in a document from the Allerheiligen monastery . Archaeologists found traces of settlement around Hügelheim, which even suggest continuous settlement since the time of the Celts.
The Black Forest Monastery of Sankt Blasien , which acted as tithe and patron saint, had the greatest influence on Hügelheim . In addition, there were other spiritual and secular manors such as the Waldeck or Urberg families . Politically, Hügelheim belonged to the dominion of Badenweiler , later to the margraviate of Baden-Durlach .
Like all of southern Baden, Hügelheim suffered a lot from wars and epidemics in the 17th and 18th centuries. In the peacetime of the 18th and 19th centuries, agriculture and especially viticulture developed well. In the early 19th century, Hügelheim came to the Grand Duchy of Baden and became an independent municipality.
On January 1, 1974, Hügelheim was incorporated into Müllheim , one year after the district of Müllheim was dissolved . Many of the farms that characterize the village were renovated as part of the village development program in the 1980s, including old village wells. In 2006, Hügelheim won the bronze medal in the state competition Our village should become more beautiful - our village has a future .

Up until the 1960s, Hügelheim was largely rural. There are still eleven full-time farmers and winemakers in the village today, as well as numerous part-time winemakers. In 1952, the Hügelheim wine cooperative was founded, with around 100 members and around 70 hectares of vineyards, it is one of the smaller wine cooperatives in the Markgräflerland. The largest employer with approx. 260 employees in Hügelheim is Glaskontor GmbH, a production site of the Schott glass works . In Hügelheim there is a compressor station of the Trans-Europa-Naturgas-Pipeline (TENP). Many residents are commuters to the surrounding cities and communities. Hügelheim has no supermarkets and no gas stations, but does have a butcher's shop with a restaurant. Supra-local supply tasks are also served, including sales areas for stoves, wedding dresses and herbs. There is also a cat boarding facility and a rental station for mobile homes and roof luggage.
The Mannheim – Basel railway runs along the western edge of the village . The next train stations on this route are in Müllheim and Buggingen . The federal highway 3 from Freiburg to Weil am Rhein divides Hügelheim into a western and an eastern half. Another road connection exists to Zienken . Local public transport is guaranteed by SWEG buses .
Hügelheim has a still intact and used local call system, which is rare in Germany .
