history

Until 1871 the steamships and ferry boats heading for Norderney had to anchor in the fairway running parallel to the south of the island , the Norderneyer Riffgat or Norderneyer Roadstead . The passengers then boarded boats or, at low tide, on horse-drawn carriages and reached the island with dry feet.

“As soon as we anchored, our captain had the flag raised as the usual signal for the islanders of the arrival of a new ship. Thereupon a sloop, which lay in the middle of our distance from the bank, started to move towards us, into which it was a bit uncomfortable to get on from our ewer. But since this boat was not able to bring us completely to the bank due to the lack of the required depth of the water, an open two-horse basket wagon came towards us, up to the Axen in the water, which took us out of the boat again by means of one more more dangerous getting on and off and finally brought us to the beach, where we were greeted with great cheers by several bathers who were already waiting for us here and the funny musicians of the bathing establishment "

- Travel report by Karl Schulz, professor of philosophy, Halle 1813

With the construction of an iron landing stage in 1871, it was no longer necessary to disembark the ship's passengers. The bridge, which was dismantled towards winter, was 88 meters long and 2.50 meters wide. For the design of the investor , building officer Adolf Tolle received the progress medal from the jury of the Vienna World Exhibition in 1873 . In 1873/74, the 1200-meter-long flood-free road that led from the pier to the village entrance (at today's Haus Schiffahrt) was also raised.

The first passenger bridge in today's port was built in the course of the establishment of a steamboat connection from Norddeich Mole in 1872. In 1873/74 the harbor basin was completed with a 1268 meter long dam, which gives the harbor basin a C-shape (see picture on the right).

Construction of the port began in 1880, and major expansions took place between 1888 and 1892. At the head of the port there was a separate bridge, the Lloyd pier , for the saloon steamers from Hamburg and Bremerhaven . The port also made it easier to unload and load cargo.

The year-round ferry connection between Norderney and the mainland has existed since 1888. In order to improve the comfort of the waiting travelers, the construction of the first waiting hall at the port began in 1890. Today, in addition to the waiting hall, there are two ferry docks, the north and south moles, for the car ferries of the shipping company Norden-Frisia, which is based in the port. Next to it is a bridge over which the excursion traffic to the neighboring islands, the Wadden Sea and for the connection Norderney-Heligoland is handled.

For the year 2022, the port operator N-Ports is planning the renovation of the south pier at ferry terminal 1.Examinations of the sheet piling in 2019 showed that their stability is no longer given in the long term and that restoration is necessary. The south mole was rebuilt in 1968 in order to create a faster mooring possibility for the rapidly increasing tourist traffic and replaced the old pier from 1892. Due to the sea water and the fluctuating water level , the steel sheet piling is susceptible to corrosion . During the construction work, ferry pier 2 will be used as an alternative for the ferries.

Today's meaning

There is a ferry connection in the scheduled service of the shipping company Norden-Frisia between Norderney and Norddeich Mole . The ferries Frisia I , Frisia II , Frisia III , Frisia IV , Frisia V and Frisia VI ensure the transport connection to and from Norderney. 825,000 people and a total of 180,000 cars and delivery vehicles were transported in the first half of 2004, making the Norddeich-Mole / Norderney connection the second most important German ferry connection. Comparative figures from 2009 showed 1,976 million passengers and around 146,500 car journeys. Excursions to the neighboring islands are possible with the Frisia X.

In 2004 the station building of the German Society for Rescue of Shipwrecked People (DGzRS) was inaugurated in Norderneyer Hafen . It replaced the Norderney-Ost boat shed on the west beach of the island and serves as a building for events and repairs that can be carried out there. The rescue cruiser Eugen of the DGzRS has been stationed on a pontoon in the port since 2018 . The Emden Waterways and Shipping Office (WSA Emden) maintains a branch on Norderney in the form of a building yard (barrel yard). The buoy north and the Lütjeoog have north and south of the task of driving gullies the East Frisian island chain with navaids ( tonnes , Pricken to provide and buoys) and transport them for repair or extension to Norderney or Emden. The Norden also carries out supply trips in the area of the East Frisian Wadden Sea. The survey ship Norderney has been commissioned to carry out fairway bearings in the area of the East Frisian Islands from Borkum ( Ems estuary ) to Minsener Oog ( Jadebusen / Weser estuary ). With the THOR , which is located in Wilhelmshaven, but is organizationally subordinate to the Lower Saxony State Office for Water Management, Coastal and Nature Conservation (NLWKN), operations center Norden / Norderney, the Janssand and the Leyhörn are available to ships for pollution control at sea. With the Otto Treplin , the shipping company Norden-Frisia has had a traffic safety vehicle since summer 2008. The task of the ship is to secure the construction site of the offshore wind farm alpha ventus off Borkum , which is closed to shipping , and to monitor the surrounding sea area for possible hazards from sea traffic.

In addition to the ferries and the fleet operated by the North-Norderney / Coast Research Center used by the Lower Saxony State Agency for Water Management, Coastal Protection and Nature Conservation (NLWKN), there has been a sport boat harbor in the Norderneyer harbor since 1977, which is directly connected to the harbor and operated by the Norderney e . V. is operated. The first chairman and founder of the association was the painter Poppe Folkerts from 1925 to 1939 and from 1933 to 1947 .

The Seglerverein Norderney eV is connected to the port with almost 300 berths and maintains the former Baltic Sea passenger ship German-Soviet Friendship under the name MS Friendship as a training ship. There is also a surf school. Two freight forwarders and several companies are also based in the port.

In addition to a ship's diesel and water filling station, west of the port, also on the south bank of the island, is the loading ramp for the freight ferry terminal, where the flat keel freight ferries such as the Frisia VII , Frisia VIII and the island disposal company Störtebeker from Norddeich can moor to and disposal trips between Norddeich-Mole and Norderney. The garbage is removed from the waste handling facility on the island, which is then recycled on the mainland, including in Großefehn , Hage , and in the Georgsheil recycling center . According to information from the Norden-Frisia shipping company, the freight volume amounts to 350,000 tons per year.
