hamlet_X

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

hamlet_X is an intermedia art project by Herbert Fritsch .

Emergence

The initiator of hamlet_X is Herbert Fritsch , a former actor at the Volksbühne Berlin . Since 2000 he has been working on hamlet_X in different constellations and including various artistic media and forms of expression. The starting point is the Hamlet fabric.

With the help of a specific concept of narrative structure and aesthetics by Fritsch, the highly topical story of the young man returning home, who, in conflict with his feelings, has to see through the balance of power at the home court and thus in his family, is to be told and made tangible. Hamlet is the representative for everyone and everyone, because everyone is overtaken by the astonished view of the world, the mistrust, the disappointment, the play with power, the struggle for friendship and love.

Fritsch divides Shakespeare's text into 111 parts. For Fritsch, each of these parts stands as an independent short drama. The entire text / material is reconstructed non-linearly through the implementation of the parts in art short films. The Hamlet material is supplemented by stories and backgrounds for which virtual characters (such as the cook, the chauffeur or the gynecologist at the farm) are used. These characters appear in the so-called reference films. A total of 222 films will be produced.

Number symbolism

The number symbolism plays an important role for Fritsch. The 11 and the 111 give structure to the formats and products from hamlet_X and Herbert Fritsch.

Installations

Various installations have meanwhile been realized, for example in the Prater of the Volksbühne Berlin or as part of the RuhrTriennale 2006 (“hamlet_X // class trip with milk”). The installations are tailored to the location and the context of the presentation and clearly illustrate Fritsch's interdisciplinary and cross-genre way of thinking and working. At the International Short Film Festival in Oberhausen 2009 , along with other works by Herbert Fritsch, all 55 short films made so far could be seen in one installation.
