Hydrography and geology

The west side of the group is the catchment area of the Schwarza of the Leitha , the east side of the Piesting area of the Fischa . The small brooks in the group go largely star-shaped from the Handelsberg-Hahnstab area.

The group belongs entirely to the Northern Limestone Alps of the Northern Alps (Eastern Alpine Permomesozoic , Triassic - Lower Cretaceous ). The northern part of the group is bankiger Hauptdolomit (here Oberkarn - Obernor , 230-210 mya), the central part of older Wettersteinplatz dolomite ( Laden - Cordevolian to 240 mya), southern follows again the handle Berg Hauptdolomit, the transition of the sub-mount blanket for about donating Göller- Ceiling as two of the partial ceiling of the Ötscher ceiling . The southwest flanks around Schwarzau are younger, small clods of Dachstein limestone (Anninger limestone ), Plassenkalk , Ramsaudolomit and Flachwassergosau , which are documented in the Falkenstein Nature Park .

Especially the Südschrofen of the Handlesberg and the valley near Schwarzau show some caves.
