The hand cable ferry in Leißnitz is a passenger and loading ferry in the Oder-Spree district . It connects the Friedland district of Leißnitz with the diving district of Ranzig across the River Spree and is the only manual cable-operated ferry in the state of Brandenburg . The city of Friedland, as the owner, leases the watercraft to a private individual entrepreneur. At the intersection of the Oder-Spree-Tour , Brandenburg , Beeskow - Sulęcin and Spreeradweg cycle paths, the ferry allows hikers and cyclists to cross the Spree only. A crossing takes about four minutes and saves a 16 km detour via Beeskow. The ferry service will be maintained from April to October. Up to ten people and ten bicycles can be transported per crossing. In the event of storms, fog, thunderstorms and heavy rain, operations are stopped.

The ferry is stationed on the banks of the Leißnitz river. There is also the former ferry house, which is now a snack bar and boat rental. To cross over from the rancid side, the ferryman has to be called by striking a bell.

history

Until the end of the Second World War there was a larger ferry in Leißnitz, which consisted of wooden planks and was moved by hand using a chain wheel. Horse-drawn vehicles and machines could be transported by it. Today's small ferry has been in operation since 1999. The boat was laid down in the Oder shipyard in Eisenhüttenstadt in 1971 and sailed over the Oder-Spree Canal in Fürstenberg (Oder) until 1996 . In 2011 the ferry was completely overhauled and given a new coat of paint. The ferry bags were also renovated and equipped with new wooden planks. Funding went into the renovation and expansion.

Because of numerous accidents in 2008, warning signs were put up around 120 meters in front of and behind the ferry station. Pleasure boat drivers disregarded the overtaking ban during the ferry operation and collided with the taut wire rope.

functionality

At the Leißnitz deep cable ferry, the steel cable ends are firmly anchored on both banks. Before being laid down, the wire rope is tensioned with a winch and guided over rollers attached to the railing during operation . Otherwise it lies loosely on the bottom of the water and does not hinder the cruising ship traffic . The ferryman pulls the vehicle along the wire rope across the river with the help of a grab. To do this, he walks along the railing over a slatted frame on the deck in order to use his legs to develop greater strength. This area must not be obstructed by people or bicycles in order to enable unhindered operation. Once the ferry has started moving and the weather conditions are favorable, a single arm stroke is usually sufficient.

One advantage of these ferries is that they can operate safely even in strong currents.
