Hanns Georgi was born in Dresden as the youngest of five children of August Friedrich Wilhelm Georgi and Anna Georgi, née Scharschmidt. From 1907 he attended the community school , where he illustrated his essays with pictures from an early age. From 1915 to 1922 Georgi trained as a teacher at the Freiherrlich von Fletcher teacher seminar in Dresden-Neustadt. During his training he met the painter Osmar Schindler , who let him work in his studio in his free time and advised him to study art. Georgi only finished his training and worked as a teacher in Hermsdorf from 1922 to 1926.

In 1921 Georgi met his future wife, Elfriede Engel, whom he married in 1929. He had three children with her: Dieter (1932), Heinrich (1938) and Ulrich (1942). In 1923 Georgi had his first major exhibition in Sebnitz , where he showed paintings, watercolors, drawings and etchings. In 1926 Georgi took part in the International Art Exhibition in Dresden and a year later became a member of the German Association of Artists , to which he belonged until its dissolution in 1936.

From 1926 to 1931 Georgi studied German, history, philosophy and education at the University of Leipzig . From 1928 Sebnitz became his permanent residence. In 1931 he received his doctorate as Dr. phil. at the Philosophical Faculty of the University of Leipzig.

From March 1931 to spring 1933 Georgi was a research assistant at the Pedagogical Institute of the Technical University of Dresden . From 1933 to 1939 he worked as a teacher in the city school in Sebnitz. In April 1933 Georgi also joined the NSDAP , in the hope of being able to work again in academic teacher training. In the following years Georgi painted a lot and traveled to Sassnitz , Stettin and the Bohemian Central Mountains . In 1936 an application for a better position in the school service failed.

In August 1938 he completed a reserve exercise to train as an artilleryman in Frankenberg. On August 25, 1939, Georgi was drafted and first took part in the attack on Poland , then later in the French campaign . From September 1940 he worked again as a teacher in Sebnitz. From 1941 to 1945 Georgi helped set up a teacher training institute in Bischofswerda . In 1945 he was called up for service in the Volkssturm during the last weeks of the war . From 1945, after leaving school, Georgi worked as a freelance painter and graphic artist. From 1947 to 1949 Georgi was appointed to the jury of the Max Pechstein Prize donated by the city of Zwickau .

In July 1948, the Henning Gallery in Halle showed the first extensive exhibition of oil paintings, watercolors and drawings. In the fifties, sixties and seventies Georgi reached the height of his illustrative work.

From 1948 to 1963 he gave lectures on art history and literature at the Adult Education Center in Sebnitz. 1952 Georgi became a member of the Association of Visual Artists of the GDR . From 1955 to 1960 he made long trips to the Federal Republic, including the Moselle, Duisburg and Munich . In 1961 his wife Elfriede died. The building of the wall meant that Georgi could no longer travel to the Federal Republic of Germany until he retired in 1966 and even had to forego exhibitions of his pictures. In retirement, Georgi traveled a lot and brought back many paintings, sketches and watercolors from his travels. He also often stayed with his three sons who had long since left their parents' home.

In 1987 and 1988 he made his last major trips to Bad Vilbel . Since 1988 his health deteriorated, his hand became more and more insecure and in the summer of 1989 he painted his last pictures.

Hanns Georgi died on October 23, 1989 in the house of his son Heinrich in Malschendorf near Dresden.
