Hans Conrad from Orelli
Hans Conrad von Orelli ; and Johann Konrad Orelli (* 22. August 1770 in Wädenswil , another source Zurich , † 25. October 1826 in Zurich) was a Swiss Protestant clergyman and university teachers .
Life
Hans Conrad von Orelli was the son of Johann Caspar von Orelli (* 1741 in Zurich; † October 22, 1800 ibid), Governor of Wädenswil, and his wife Dorothea (* August 5, 1746 in Zurich; † February 23, 1798 ibid) , Daughter of Hans Martin Usteri (1722–1803). His cousin was the philologist Johann Caspar von Orelli .
He attended high school in Zurich; his teachers there were Johann Jakob Steinbrüchel , Johann Jakob Breitinger and Leonhard Usteri (1741–1789).
He enrolled at the Collegium Carolinum Zurich and studied theology, although he was more interested in philology; He was ordained in 1792 . Because he had no opportunity to study at a German university, he compiled excerpts from college notebooks from the lectures of Friedrich August Wolf from the University of Halle .
In 1794 he was appointed professor for church history and in 1796 for ethics and natural laws at the Collegium Carolinum Zurich, whose rector he was from 1815 to 1816; in addition, he had been a deacon at the Predigerkirche since autumn 1796 , where in 1810 he also became pastor and canon at the Grossmünsterstift .
Hans Conrad von Orelli was married to Dorothea (* 1777 in Zurich; † March 9, 1846 ibid), daughter of Rudolf Cramer (1743–1794), archdeacon at Zurich's Grossmünster, since 1797 . They had two children together:
- Hans Martin von Orelli (* 1799 in Zurich; † August 4, 1799 ibid);
- Susanna Margaretha von Orelli (born September 5, 1811 in Zurich; † 1904); first marriage to Hans Rudolf Spöndli († 1834 in Dübendorf ) and second marriage to Diethelm Burkhard (1798–1871); her grandson was the later eponymous politician Diethelm Burkhard .
Spiritual and literary work
Hans Conrad von Orelli stood as a free-minded theologian in opposition to Johann Kaspar Lavater .
He published a large number of his sermons and edited Latin and Greek classics, including the Disputationum adversus gentes libri septem by Arnobius the Elder, and also on the more recent school and church history of Zurich.
He corresponded in writing with the Catholic theologian Ignaz Heinrich von Wessenberg and the philologist Friedrich Jacobs , among others .
