Hans-Jürgen Teuteberg

Hans-Jürgen Teuteberg or Hans Jürgen Teuteberg (born December 18, 1929 in Düsseldorf ; † February 14, 2015 in Münster ) was a German historian and from 1974 to 1995 Professor of Social and Economic History and Director of the History Department at the University of Münster . An important work is his first book, History of Industrial Co-Determination in Germany (1961), in which he dealt with the predecessors of the Works Constitution Act and the Co-Determination Act . A second focus was historical nutrition research in Germany.

Live and act

Teuteberg completed a newspaper traineeship from 1949 to 1951, after which he was a freelance journalist in Hildesheim and Göttingen . From 1952 he studied modern history, economics and English at the Georg-August University in Göttingen , as well as legal history and sociology; In 1956 he completed his studies with a doctorate. From 1956 to 1962 Teuteberg was a research assistant at the Social Research Center at the University of Münster , Department of Industrial and Business Sociology in Dortmund ; his task was the editing of the magazine "Soziale Welt - Vierteljahrsschrift der Vereinigung Sozialwissenschaftlicher Instituts". In 1962 he became head of studies at the "Institute for Economic and Social Policy House Rissen" in Hamburg . From 1963 to 1968 he was a research assistant at the chair for economic and social history at the University of Hamburg (seminar for social sciences), and was appointed to the scientific council or senior councilor. From 1969 to 1973 Teuteberg worked as a university lecturer in Hamburg. Finally, in 1974, he was appointed professor for modern and contemporary social and economic history at the Westphalian Wilhelms University (WWU) in Münster , and at the same time became director of the history seminar. He held this chair until his retirement in 1995. From 1991 Teuteberg was Dean of the Faculty of Philosophy for four semesters.

Teuteberg was active in numerous committees. From 1976 to 1982 he was a member of the board of trustees and the scientific advisory board of the Institute for Comparative Urban History at the University of Münster. In the Collaborative Research Center (SFB) of the WWU Münster he was the coordinator of the project area "Urbanization", from 1983 to 1989 he was the leading SFB spokesman. In 1977 he was appointed a member of the Presidium of the German Nutrition Society (DGE), where he was head of the “Nutrition and Social Sciences” department. In 1980 he was elected a full member of the Historical Commission for Westphalia (corresponding member since 2006); Also in 1980 he was elected to the advisory board of the magazine “Unternehmensgeschichte”. He was appointed examiner (later chief reviewer) for the subject of economic and social history by the German Research Foundation . In 1987 he became a member of the British Economic History Society, and in 1988 a member of the scientific advisory board of the Westphalian Economic Archives Foundation at the Dortmund Chamber of Commerce and Industry . In 1994 Teuteberg was appointed to the scientific advisory board of the "Prague Economic and Social-Historical Communications" of the Institute for Economic and Social History at Charles University in Prague , and in 1997 a member of the advisory board of the scientific journal "Voyage" for research into modern tourism.

Several stays abroad should be mentioned. In 1977 he completed a research semester at the Center for Regional Economic History, Eleutherian Mill Hagley Foundation in Wilmington, Delaware, USA. In 1983 he was visiting professor for three months at Nagasaki University (Japan), in 1985 he was a DAAD visiting professor for six months at Nankei University in Tientsin / China. After retiring, a three-month guest lecturer at the private Senshu University in Japan followed in 1996 and a six-month guest professorship at the Institute for European Ethnology at the University of Innsbruck in 2000/2001 .

Teuteberg was involved in the founding of several associations: In 1977 the "Arbeitsgemeinschaft Ernahrungwesen" eV (AGEV) was founded in Münster, of which he was chairman and conference leader for years. After founding the International Commission for Research into European Food History (ICREFH) in 1989, Teuteberg was its first president. In 1991 the working group for transport history of the German Transport Science Society was founded , in which he took over the chairmanship. In 1994 he was appointed chairman of the international working group for cultural research on food at the University of Bayreuth in conjunction with the Dr. Rainer Wild Foundation elected in Heidelberg. In 2006 Teuteberg founded the quarterly private debating club “Zeitzeugen über 65” for professors emeritus from six different subjects at the WWU Münster and the honorary president of the Central Association of German Crafts, Paul Schnitker , who also took over the management of this club.
