Hans Rohde (officer)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hans Rohde (born October 27, 1888 in Roggen , Neidenburg district ; † April 30, 1954 in Pellworm ) was a German lieutenant general and military attaché as well as an active officer in the armed forces of the Ottoman Empire . In this function he took part in the First Balkan War and later on the German side in the First World War.

Professional career

In 1906 Rohde became an ensign in the Prussian Army . In 1910, at the invitation of İzzet Pascha , the then Chief of Staff of the Ottoman armed forces, he was also an Ottoman officer in the rank of lieutenant as a German first lieutenant . When the First Balkan War broke out in 1912, Rohde was stationed in Palestine as a trainer . Both the governments of both the German Empire and the Ottoman Empire forbade German officers in Ottoman service from participating in the war. Like several other officers, Rohde went to the front on his own and, through İzzet Pascha's intercession, got Nazım Pascha to grant him special permission to serve as a general staff officer . Rohde served on the Dardanelle Front and was transferred to Istanbul in May 1913 , where he resigned from the Ottoman service as a captain and returned to Germany. At the Second Balkan War , he did not participate.

During the First World War, Rohde initially took part as a company commander on the Eastern Front (most recently Infantry Regiment No. 129 ) before he was sent again to the Ottoman Empire as a liaison officer in 1917 .

After the end of the war, Rohde remained an officer in the Reichswehr in staff deployment and also received additional diplomatic training. After this preparation, he was again commanded as a liaison officer and instruction officer at the war school in Turkey in 1935 and in 1936 appointed as a military attaché for representation in Turkey, Greece and Iran , based in Ankara . There he worked in this function during the Second World War until August 1944 and finally achieved the rank of lieutenant general.

After the end of the war, Rohde and his wife moved to Pellworm in 1947, where he died in 1954.

Journalistic activity

Hans Rohde also appeared as the author of military publications and articles on current international politics. Beginning in 1913, he wrote several books about his personal experiences in the Balkan War and his military assessment of the course of the war. In later years he became known for several publications on Turkey. In the interwar period, Rohde concentrated on contributions to international armaments policy.
