Hans Werner Berretz's works are poetic, picturesque and predominantly abstract. They appear in expressive colors and color gradients. Objective objects are often integrated like a collage in the form of a certain symbolism. Similar to musical compositions, the works defy a clear, logical definition. In his painting, Hans Werner Berretz is influenced by artists like Paul Klee and Emil Schumacher, especially Ingeborg Bachmann and Paul Celan . Celan's poems Huhediblu , Die Todesfuge , etc. have been running through his work since 1992. Language and drawing - sound and color; Musical allusions lead to a system of pictorial designs, which often lead to a multilayered, polyphonic surface design.

He, himself also a musician ( double bass ), merges musical sensations and the building blocks of musical creations (sketches, scores, etc.) with painting. This is how titles such as the picture cycle Faded Noise and Sound of Pictures are created .

Conversely, artists from other genres dedicate their own compositions to him. For example, the musical compositions by Bernd Hänschke , titled analogously with fading noise , and Violeta Dinescu's string quartet for Berretz's series Die Todesfuge based on the poem of the same name by Paul Celan.

There were regular collaborations with contemporary classical musicians and composers such as Kurt Masur , Karlheinz Stockhausen , Violeta Dinescu, Bernd Hänschke, Michael Denhoff .

Another focus of Ha WeBe's artistic work is dealing with the Holocaust .

Quote

The composer Michael Denhoff on the pictures by Hans Werner Berretz:

“They don't depict the music, they are music themselves in a very sensual way. The image space vibrates through the fine vibrations that the triggering music set in motion. The pictures shine from within. "
