The Hansa Brandenburg was a full container ship of the Hamburg shipping company Leonhardt & Blumberg sailing under the Liberian flag .

history

The ship was 2002 under yard number GWS291 on the shipyard Guangzhou Wenchong Shipyard in China's Guangzhou built. The keel-laying of the ship took place on March 31st, the launch on July 23rd, 2002. The ship was completed on December 30, 2002.

The ship belonged to a one-ship company belonging to the Hamburg shipping company Leonhardt & Blumberg. It was financed through a ship fund and sailed with 24 ships of the same type in a revenue pool set up by Hansa Treuhand.

Fire on board

On the morning of 15 July 2013, a fire broke out on board the ship in a container stowed in front of the deckhouse , which could not be fought with on-board resources. After the fire had spread to other containers and parts of the deckhouse, the 17-person crew left the ship and were rescued by the nearby container ship Donau Trader of the Buss shipping company and brought to Port Louis on Mauritius . Employees from Five Oceans Salvage and Smit Salvage , who were tasked with salvaging the ship, were able to bring the fire under control and finally extinguish it on July 19. The ship was then towed to Mauritius, where it was unloaded and searched for the cause of the fire.

The Hansa Brandenburg , which chartered the Singapore- based Pacific International Lines (PIL), was on the way from Singapore to Durban about 200  nautical miles northeast of the island of Mauritius in the Indian Ocean . The Hamburger Morgenpost reported an explosion on board the ship.

In October 2013 the ship was sold to India for demolition.
