action

The young author Christoph dreams of writing a real hardcover book one day. Instead, he keeps his head above water with a job in a car rental company and writes dime novels on the side. When the petty crook Dominik steals a car from the rental company, Christoph sees his chance. In a confrontation , he claims to have never seen Dominik before and speaks to him later in order to be able to research him in the Düsseldorf milieu .

Dominik agrees and introduces him to the suspicious gang boss Chico. In his world of drugs and prostitution , Dominik quickly turns out to be a little light. “Dom”, as he wants to be called, works as a doorman in a bar owned by Chico. He is also in the field of grass his own best customer.

When Christoph Chico sees him allegedly committing manslaughter, he and Dom are in distress. Both can, however, first convince Chico of their trustworthiness. During his research, Christoph met the Polish stripper Ewa and fell in love with her. They spend a night together, but she is not interested in a relationship because she wants to go back to Poland. Dom tries to win his girlfriend back by untruthfully telling her that he got a lucrative job at Chico. To raise money, Dom and Christoph take a job for Chico. They are given the task of buying a car for Chico from some gangsters in Holland. Both drive to Holland and are there put on the cross by the gangsters: They collect the money and simply take the car back with them. Although Dominik points a pistol at the two of them, he is not cold-blooded enough to use this weapon. Both are then in Chico's chalk. Therefore, Christoph and Dom try to attack the car rental company in order to get a car. That goes wrong too, because the police arrive by chance, end the "attack" and arrest Dom on top of all of this.

To get Dom free, Christoph offers the public prosecutor to convict Chico of manslaughter. He goes bugged into Chico's office and tries to get a confession. Instead, however, the supposedly slain appears and Chico threatens to kill Christoph. The police get him out of the precarious situation, but shortly afterwards drop him.

Chico is now demanding half the income from the book that Christoph had intended to write all along. Christoph offers everything so that Chico lets go of Dom and begins to write the book.

A year later, Dom was released from prison. Christoph receives him with a hot off the press copy of his book “Hardcover” in which he has hidden a joint for his friend. Of course, Dom wants to smoke it right away, so they both get into an argument because Christoph doesn't want to allow this in his car. He hits a bumper with his car .

After both got out, Dom lights his joint and both stand leaning against the car, smoking, while the credits begin.

Reviews

" Hardcover is a classic buddy movie that lives less from its exciting story than from the performance of two guys who initially hate each other, but gradually discover sympathy for each other and eventually even become close friends."

“Unlike his colleagues from Hollywood,“ Lammbock ”director Christian Zübert does not rely on excessive action and violence in his gangster story, which he also wrote, but rather on the comedy and the chemistry between the unequal duo. [...] All in all a buddy film from West German states that exudes real cinema flair and has what it takes to become the next German comedy hit. "

"Actually convincing buddy comedy, which starts with a swing, but all too soon loses its speed and charm."

"After his directorial debut in" Lammbock ", Christian Zübert has once again created a thoroughly successful German comedy with" Hardcover ", which not only offers bizarre entertainment but also a powerful soundtrack."
