Harold "Harry" J. Greene (* 1959 in Boston , Massachusetts , † August 5, 2014 in Kabul ) was an American major general in the US Army who died in the Afghan War.

Life

Greene grew up in New York State, graduated in 1980 from the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and on May 25, 1980 became Second Lieutenant of the ROTC of the pioneers in the US Army. He attended the United States Army War College , where he graduated with a Master of Strategic Studies. He was also awarded a doctorate in materials science from the University of Southern California . After a career in various administrative positions, including in Germany and Turkey , Colonel Greene became Brigadier General in December 2009 . On September 2, 2012, he was promoted to major general. In January 2014, he was transferred to Afghanistan, where he served as deputy commander of the Combined Security Transition Command.

Camp Kargha incident

During a visit by a high-ranking delegation on August 5, 2014 to the grounds of the Marshal Fahim University, a training facility of the Afghan army , the Afghan soldier Rafiqullah opened fire with an assault rifle at Camp Kargha on the group of visitors who were gathering for a briefing would have. Greene was fatally wounded and at least 17 other people, including German Brigadier General Michael Bartscher and two Afghan generals , were wounded.

Greene has been the highest-ranking US officer since the death of Lieutenant General Timothy Maude on September 11, 2001 , to be killed by an enemy attack.

family

Greene lived in Falls Church , Virginia with his wife, Susan Sue Myers, a retired Colonel and professor at the United States Army War College in Pennsylvania , and their children Amelia and Matthew, who is himself a First Lieutenant in the US Army .

Greene was posthumously honored with the Purple Heart and buried with military honors in Arlington National Cemetery on August 14, 2014 .
