action

The story takes place in the early 1950s in the small village of Oberschönau in the Bavarian Alps. The teacher's daughter Maria and the young farmer Mathias want to get married soon. But a severe blow of fate thwarted the couple's plans: The hunting assistant Franz was stabbed by a poacher, and the police found Mathias' knife at the scene of the crime. In order to avoid being arrested, the accused went abroad. That is why most of the villagers believe that Mathias is the murderer. But Mary firmly believes in his innocence.

Across the border, Mathias finds shelter with the mother of a deceased friend. He thinks he knows the real culprit, namely Leo Stanzer, the wood manager of the sawmill; but the latter can prove that he was with Zenzi's maid at the time in question. When the Meier couple from Germany spent their vacation with Mathias Zimmerwirtin, they took Mathias's side. Together they try to gather all the circumstances that could prove Mathias' innocence.

One day Maria visits her fiancé in his hiding place and asks him to return to his terminally ill mother. Mathias doesn't hesitate and rushes home. He is arrested on his mother's deathbed. Now resolute Maria takes the reins in her hand. At the risk of her life she manages to convict the real murderer. Nothing stands in the way of marrying Mathias.
