The Heinrich-Hertz-Kaserne is a barracks of the army of the Bundeswehr in Daun in Rhineland-Palatinate . The barracks are located north of Daun and west of the federal highway 1 near the intersection of the federal highways 421 and 257 .

North of Barracks is a training area . For the shooting training , the use of soldiers of the barracks, the location shooting in Gees ( Gerolstein ) or elm .

history

After the damage from the Second World War was repaired, attempts were made to establish industry in Daun without success. As early as 1954 there were first considerations to seek a garrison. The Prime Minister of Rhineland-Palatinate was asked to support the city. A suitable area was offered for a military training area and a shooting range . The site was inspected in July 1956 and in the following year Daun received confirmation from the Federal Ministry of Defense that a stationing was planned. Since the area seemed rather unsuitable for heavy tanks and the city council also sought to expand tourism, attempts were made to counteract the stationing of artillery .

Construction of the barracks began in December 1961 and the topping-out ceremony was held in 1963. Nevertheless, the conditions when moving into the new accommodation in 1965 were not yet optimal, as the last buildings were not completed until 1966. The barracks in Daun were officially handed over on October 27, 1965 with a ceremonial roll call .

The location had a positive effect on the local infrastructure in Daun. Additional funds and grants were approved, for example, to expand the water supply and build a new church and high school. At the end of the 1980s, a new central radio monitoring station was built in Daun. With the end of the Cold War , the Bundeswehr location was at risk in the early 1990s. Mayor and citizens of Daun campaigned for the Bundeswehr to remain in place with a signature campaign. In 2013, 200 more soldiers were stationed in Daun, previously the total was 750.

Naming

At first the barracks had no name, but was referred to as "Daun Troop Accommodation". Only in the 1970s was it named after the physicist Heinrich Hertz , who had proven the existence of electromagnetic waves . These waves are the basis for transmitting messages by radio .
