Heinrich Riedel (born March 17, 1903 in Nuremberg , † June 8, 1989 in Munich ) was a German Protestant theologian and pastor.

Life

After graduating from Melanchthon-Gymnasium in Nuremberg , Riedel studied Protestant theology in Erlangen and Leipzig and received both theological exams. During his studies in Erlangen, he became a member of the Bubenreuther fraternity in 1922 . In 1926 he became prefect in the Protestant school home in Schweinfurt , after which he was vicar in Zirndorf for three years . From 1930 to 1934 he was pastor in Thuisbrunn in the Forchheim district , part-time he was also in charge of an adult education center for workers in Kasberg ; both places belong to Graefenberg today .

From 1934 to 1943 Riedel held the office of the first regional youth pastor based in Nuremberg. Also in 1934 he became head of the state youth pastors who were close to the Confessing Church . In 1943 he moved to Kulmbach as parish priest , where he was also dean of the deanery district . At the end of the Second World War he was involved in several supply campaigns for refugees and prisoners of war.

From 1947 to 1972 he was senior church councilor in the Evangelical Lutheran regional church office in Munich and thus also belonged to the college of church leadership. In 1962 he also became the head of the spiritual department and thus deputy to the regional bishop and personnel officer. He was a member of the council of the Evangelical Church in Germany . During his time as a member of the EKD Council, the diplomatic recognition of the State of Israel by the Federal Republic of Germany took place on May 12, 1965. Riedel was one of those who, together with Council Chairman Kurt Scharf, increased the public pressure, which ultimately induced Chancellor Ludwig Erhard to initiate the exchange of ambassadors against the will of the Foreign Office . Because on October 26, 1964, the EKD Council sent a letter to the Federal Government that Riedel had brought along, in which it was clearly in favor of a German-Israeli ambassador exchange.

In the EKD division, Riedel was also the chairman of the Diaconal Council and the founder and head of the Bread for the World distribution committee . He was also a member of the Lutheran World Service commission in the Lutheran World Federation in Geneva and was a member of the EKD's Church Development Service Committee. From 1972 to 1977 he was an appointed member of the Bavarian Senate . He was awarded the Bavarian Order of Merit on December 15, 1959.
