Heinrich Tocke

Heinrich Tocke , also Toke , (* around 1390 in Bremen ; † June 27, 1454 in Magdeburg ) was a German theologian of the late Middle Ages.

Life

Tocke studied philosophy and theology at the universities in Erfurt and Rostock . In 1419 he became dean of the Philosophical Faculty of the University of Rostock and in 1424 rector of the university. He was friends with Heinrich von Geismar . In 1426 he received his doctorate in Erfurt as Dr. theol. and received his appointment as canon in the cathedral chapter of Magdeburg Cathedral . The office was connected with the newly created cathedral preacher . In 1432 he took part in the Council of Basel as envoy of the Archbishop of Magdeburg, Günther , and had a not inconsiderable part in the settlement with Bohemia. From 1434 Tocke was at least formally a lecturer at Bremen Cathedral , but also a proven participant in several diets from 1438 and, in connection with these, tried to settle the council with Pope Eugene IV .

In 1441 Tocke returned to Magdeburg and continued to work intensively to reform the Catholic Church. From 1443 on, his special struggle was against the blood miracle of Wilsnack, protected by the Magdeburg suffragan diocese , the diocese of Havelberg under its bishop Konrad von Lintorff . The support received in this fight from the papal legate Nikolaus von Kues , who even forbade the pilgrimage to Wilsnack in 1451 , did not make these efforts successful. After a series of mutual excommunications between Magdeburg and Havelberg, Pope Nicholas V ended the dispute in March 1453 and granted the Brandenburg Elector Friedrich II , who was personally present in Rome at the time, a number of privileges, including a new confirmation of the pilgrimage to the Holy Blood of Wilsnack.
