Heiratsschwindler is a crime film by the director Herbert Selpin from 1938. The literary film adaptation is based on the novel Die Rote Mütze by the writer Gertrud von Brockdorff . In the main role, Harald Paulsen embodies the criminally inclined Paul Gerber, who pretends to be a marriage swindler under the name A. Häselich.

Marriage swindler Häselich is released from prison after serving his sentence and immediately reverts to his old behavior. He finds his next victim in the shy waitress Melitta Doleschal, to whom he promises her marriage, and at the same time he flirts with the wealthy hotel landlady Lisbeth Lindemann, who sees through his game. When his dizziness is exposed again, while on the run, Häselich is overwhelmed by a railway official, who is the father of a previous victim of Häselich, and handed over to the police.

The film premiered on February 15, 1938 in Berlin . In Denmark this happened almost a year later, on February 13, 1939 (there under the title Ægteskabssvindleren ). It was first broadcast on German television on December 15, 1982 on NDR . The film was also shown under the different film titles Adventure of a certain Mr. Haeselich , Novel of a Marriage Impostor and The Red Hat .

Hans Lehmann ran together with Ludwig Behrends the production . The shooting locations were Lassan and the train station in Drewitz.

Film censorship

The Nazi regime checked the film for any content that might be detrimental to the regime and, with resolution B.47075, imposed a youth ban on it on December 15, 1937 within the framework of the then usual film censorship .
