Heseon Hellen Kwon (born January 11, 1961 in Seoul ) is a South Korean opera singer. The coloratura soprano has been a member of the Hamburg State Opera ensemble since 1987 .

Life

Kwon studied from 1979 to 1984 at the Cologne University of Music with Dietger Jacob . In 1984 she won first prize in the Italian Novara International Singing Competition . In the same year she made her debut as Queen of the Night at the Wiesbaden State Theater. For his opera La Foret , which premiered in 1986 at the Grand Théâtre de Genève , Rolf Liebermann composed a role for Hellen Kwon. As head of the Hamburg State Opera , he brought her to the house as a member of the ensemble, where she has since enjoyed success in many roles.

So far she has sung the role of Queen of the Night at all major opera houses, including Paris, Zurich , the Bavarian State Opera in Munich and the Vienna State Opera . The singer was also engaged at numerous international festivals: in 1988 at the Bayreuth Festival , 1989 in Aix en Provence, 1990 in Glyndebourne and in 1991 in Abduction from the Seraglio at the Salzburg Festival . In addition to her operatic activities, Hellen Kwon has also made a name for herself in the concert sector. Hellen Kwon sang under renowned conductors such as James Levine , Vladimir Ashkenazy , Giuseppe Sinopoli , Nikolaus Harnoncourt , Zubin Mehta , Wolfgang Sawallisch and Neville Marriner .

In 2010, Hellen Kwon received the Rolf Mares Prize for her role in Das Gehege in the Hamburg State Opera in the category “Exceptional Performances in Performers”. In 2011, at the suggestion of opera director Simone Young, the Hamburg Senate awarded her the honorary title of Hamburger Kammersängerin . In 2012, Hellen Kwon was awarded the “Order of Civil” by the Korean government.
