The Hellental is a former nature reserve in the Lower Saxony municipality of Heinade in the integrated municipality of Eschershausen-Stadtoldendorf , the municipality-free area Merxhausen , the city of Holzminden in the district of Holzminden , the city of Dassel and in the municipality-free area of Solling in the district of Northeim .

The former nature reserve with the signs NSG HA 149 (district Holzminden) and NSG BR 104 (district Northeim) is 182  hectares . Of this, 128 hectares are in the Holzminden district and 54 hectares in the Northeim district. It is part of the FFH area “Moore and Forests in Hochsolling, Hellental” and the EU bird sanctuary “Solling”. The former “ Vogelherd ” nature reserve connects to the southwest , and it also borders directly on the former “ Mecklenbruch ” nature reserve . The area has been under nature protection since October 12, 1990. On June 9, 2019, it opened up together with the other nature reserves in the newly designated nature reserve “ Moore and Forests in Hochsolling, Hellental ”. Responsible lower nature conservation authorities were the districts of Holzminden and Northeim.

The former nature reserve is located between Holzminden and Dassel southwest of Hellental in Solling within the Solling-Vogler Nature Park . It placed a valley cut deep into the Solling and the adjoining, moderately steep slope areas under protection. The light flows through the valley, a rift formed in the tertiary era . The fast flowing brook is accompanied by partially springy wet meadows and wood on the banks. In addition, wet come bristle grass lawn and remnants of montane meadows in front, as elsewhere in Lower Saxony only in the resin can be found. Furthermore, a are in the area alders source forest, forest rushes - and wood cornices marshes and ear willow bushes to find.

Traces of the historical irrigation system , the Fleuegräben, have been preserved in the meadow slopes. The meadows were irrigated by linear feeder ditches that were fed with spring water. Locks were set up along the ditches, which allowed the targeted irrigation of individual sections of the meadow. As traces of the historical use in the Helletal, dry stone walls have been preserved, and field terraces can still be seen here and there .

As a geological peculiarity, stream shrinkage and sinkholes occur as typical karst forms in the area .

Two circular hiking trails run through the valley from Hellental. At Hellental, a section of the grassland path designed as a nature experience path , which was opened in June 2011, runs through the area. Information on the flora and fauna of the grassland and its formation and use is conveyed at a total of twelve stations along the approximately 2.5 kilometer long nature discovery trail.
