The moors and forests in Hochsolling, Hellental are a nature reserve in the Lower Saxon town of Holzminden , the community-free area Merxhausen and the community Heinade in the integrated community Eschershausen-Stadtoldendorf in the district of Holzminden and the city of Dassel and the community-free area Solling in the district of Northeim .

General

The nature reserve with the sign NSG HA 149 is approximately 578.9  hectares . It is part of the 1430 hectare FFH area “Moore and Forests in Hochsolling, Hellental” and the 4060 hectare EU bird sanctuary “Solling” and is completely surrounded by the landscape protection area “Solling-Vogler”. The previous nature reserves " Hellental ", " Vogelherd ", " Mecklenbruch " and " Torfmoor " have merged into the nature reserve "Moore und Wälder im Hochsolling, Hellental". The area has been under nature protection since June 29, 2019. Responsible lower nature conservation authorities are the districts of Holzminden and Northeim.

The nature reserve is located southeast of Holzminden im Solling within the Solling-Vogler Nature Park . It protects the Hellental southwest of the location of Hellental with its slope areas, the adjacent forest areas on the Vogelherd and Dasseler Mittelberg as well as the Mecklenbruch northeast of the location of Silberborn and the peat bog southeast of the location of Silberborn between Moosberg and Dasseler Mittelberg. Large parts of the nature reserve are forested. Grove beech forests grow over large areas on well-supplied soils . A 10.8 hectare area on the Vogelberg has been designated as a natural forest since 1972 . The beech forests are dominated by the common beech . This is complemented by oak , birch or mountain ash , and in places also ash and sycamore maple . In the herb layer there are pill sedge , wire smith , whitish grove , thorny worm fern , wood sorrel , two-leaved shadow flower , seven-star , blueberry and beautiful common moss . Land equestrian grass can sometimes be found in lighter places . In addition to the hornbeam beech forests, there are also woodruff beech forests with red beech, sycamore maple, norway maple and ash on small scale limestone soils . The herbaceous layer is of Carex sylvatica , forest barley , Einblütigem melic , Mercurialis perennis , Arum , Brachypodium sylvaticum , yellow archangel , nettle-leaved bellflower , Solomon's seal , Big chickweed , wood sorrel and Stachys sylvatica , occasionally also daphne formed. The beech forests have a high proportion of old and dead wood .

In the area of ​​the source outlets and in the area of ​​the upper reaches of the Helle coming from the Mecklenbruch, alluvial forests with alder and ash are also growing . Spring swamps can also be found here. The riparian forests and spring swamps accommodate marsh marigold , Oxlip , bitter smock , Alternate- and Opposite-leaved golden saxifrage , Hain chickweed , mountain speedwell , Middle witchweeds , Crepis paludosa , Avens , Large balsam , Blutampfer , Equisetum sylvaticum , hairgrass , giant fescue , Luzula sylvatica , Carex Acutiformis and Winkelsegge .

The Hellental, a deeply carved brook valley, is characterized in many cases by extensively used grassland , some of which is characterized as nebula grass . Remnants of montane mountain meadows can be found in places. The light flowing through the valley is partly accompanied by wet meadows and wood on the banks. A geological feature of Hellentals are the Bach shrinkage and sinkholes . The green countries host according to different variants knapweed , Crepis biennis , Galium Mollugo , Kleiner Klee , Vicia sepium , knautia arvensis , Magerwiesenmargerite , lady's mantle , phyteuma spicatum , bristle grass , bleach Sedge , Carex Pilulifera, Luzula multiflora , arnica , three teeth , heath bedstraw , Berg pea , bloodroot , forest speedwell , Bärwurz , Meadow sedge , rabbit foot sedge , millet sedge , bulky rush and wood lice herb . When the valley was mapped in the early 1990s, numerous other plant species were also identified.

Above the Hellental and between Moosberg and Dasseler Mittelberg, there are two moored areas with low , transitional and raised bogs, the Mecklenbruch as the largest raised bog in the Solling and the peat bog . Very old bog and quarry forests , often formed from bog birch , grow here with a high proportion of dead wood and a layer of herbs rich in peat moss, in which, among other things, pipe grass , golden lady hair moss and bogberry settle. Especially in Mecklenbruch, by Wiedervernässungs - and Entkusselungs was rehabilitated measures, including forest-free areas with peat mosses are Sphagnum magellanicum , sphagnum capillifolium , Sphagnum cuspidatum and Sphagnum fallax and mosses strictum Polytrichum and Warnstorfia fluitans and bell heather , rosemary , heather , Rundblättrigem sundew and Common cranberries as well as sedge and cotton grass with meadow, hedgehog and gray harrows as well as narrow-leaved and sloping cotton grass .

The forests are the habitat of the lynx , wild cat and dormice as well as owls , Sperlings- and boreal owl and various woodpeckers , including black , gray , middle and lesser spotted woodpecker . The green lands of the Hellental are z. B. Habitat of the meadow pipit , but also many other bird species. Among other things, also are black stork , red and black kite , red-backed shrike and the great gray shrike in the area home. The nature reserve is home to many bats as the greater mouse-eared and numerous dragonfly species , including the Northern Emerald , Torfmosaikjungfer , Hochmoormosaikfungfer , Small and large white-faced darter , spear Azurjungfer , Small Emerald Damselfly and Black Darter . The meadows in Hellental offer a suitable habitat for various grasshoppers and numerous butterflies , including the brown-spotted mother-of-pearl butterfly .

The nature reserve is mainly surrounded by other forest communities from the Solling. In places, public roads run through the nature reserve, including state road 549 near Silberborn. Parts of the protected area are accessible by hiking trails. A section of the Weserberglandweg runs through Mecklenbruch and Hellental . A wooden walkway with an observation tower runs through the Mecklenbruch . In Hellental, the “Graslandpfad” is an educational nature trail that partially runs through the nature reserve and explains the special features of the valley and makes it possible to experience it. In the meadow slopes, traces of the historical irrigation system of the meadows, some of which were still used until the beginning of the 20th century, have been preserved. The meadows were irrigated with spring water with the help of the Fleurgraben. The trenches were provided with sluices that allowed targeted irrigation of individual sections of the meadow.
