In the oaks is a nature reserve in the Lower Saxony municipality of Bevern in the integrated municipality of Bevern in the Holzminden district .

The nature reserve with the sign NSG HA 170 is 110  hectares in size. It is located north of Heinsen and east of Polle on a river terrace, apart from the south, which is otherwise mainly used for agriculture, within a bend of the Weser . It places a semi-natural mixed deciduous forest area on the central terrace as well as the adjoining former gravel mining waters of the Heidbrink gravel works under protection. These bodies of water, which should develop naturally following renaturation measures , are subject to the influence of the Weser flood. The forest area presents itself as a semi-natural mixed deciduous forest with a high proportion of old oaks and dead wood .

The " Heinsener Klippen " nature reserve is located a little to the south-east .

The area has been a nature reserve since May 24, 1995. The responsible lower nature conservation authority is the district of Holzminden.

Renaturation of the gravel works Heidbrink

The former gravel works in the north of the Weserschleife near Polle today consists of several bodies of water that lie within the boundaries of the nature reserve. In the western area, gravel mining was operated by the Lower Saxony Forest Administration as early as the 1950s. 1986 began the industrial gravel mining by a company. Since solid layers of clay hindered wet mining, they turned to the northeast in the banks of the Weser. This gravel pit was exploited until the end of 2001.

The western part of the former mining area is now a shallow water area with the outside of typical vegetation. This is followed by the forest area. A bird watching hut was built on the excavation water in the bank area of the Weser just one year after the start of dismantling.

After the end of the gravel mining, the facilities were dismantled, the area was modeled according to the nature conservation purpose and trees were planted. A concrete tunnel about 30 meters long was converted into winter quarters for bats and amphibians .

The approximately 10 hectare site was purchased by the Holzminden district in December 2004. It is supervised by the Holzminden district group of the German Nature Conservation Union , which carried out further renaturation measures such as the deepening of a former flood channel and the creation of further small bodies of water. In order to support the formation of natural alluvial forest , numerous woody plants were also planted.

Today the Weser Cycle Path runs on the dam between the former mining water and the Weser . The former waste water can be seen from here. Information boards on the subject of "Nature conservation in connection with gravel mining" and "Gravel pit habitat" are located at lookout points.

For the renaturation of the former gravel works and the water bodies created by the mining, the company was awarded in the competition “German Sustainability Award for Gravel and Sand 2010” in the category “ Ecology ”.
