The deciduous forests in Hils are a nature reserve in the community-free area of ​​Wenzen and the community of Flecken Delligsen in the district of Hildesheim in Lower Saxony .

The nature reserve with the sign NSG HA 231 is approximately 512.4  hectares in size. It comprises the “Hils” sub -area of the FFH area “Deciduous forests and cliff areas in the Selter, Hils and Greener forest”. The area has been under protection since November 17, 2016. The responsible lower nature conservation authority is the district of Holzminden.

The nature reserve is located south of Alfeld (Leine) and north of Einbeck in the southeast of the Hils . It mainly places grove, woodruff and orchid beech forests under protection. In particular at the Hünenburg there are small areas of ravine and hillside mixed forests with a variety of fern and moss communities as well as rocky areas. The forest areas are largely designated as natural forest and process protection areas - in the nature reserve are the natural forests "Katzenbau", "Fahrenberg" and "Hagental", which were designated in 1989 - which are not subject to forest use. They have a high proportion of old and dead wood . In the east of the protected area there are numerous springs that drain into the Rheinbach, some of which are near-natural, and flow into the Wispe , a tributary of the Leine , a little north near Delligsen . The streams that have dug notch valleys in the Hils are accompanied by riparian forests with alder , ash and willow . Other riparian forest communities can be found in the Hagental in the west of the nature reserve, through which the Wispe flows.

Hainsimsen beech forests grow particularly on the lower slopes of the Wispe, around the Hünenburg and on the upper slopes of the east side of the Hils. The dominant tree species is the common beech . The herb layer is u. a. Formed by pill sedge , whitish grove , willow , thorn fern , wood sorrel and bilberry . Woodruff beech forests grow on the plateau and upper southern slopes of the Fahrenberg as well as on the shady, east-facing slopes of the Hilsostrand. Here, too, the tree layer is dominated by the common beech. In addition there are ash, bird cherry and sycamore maple in places . The herb layer is u. a. formed by forest sedge , single-flowered pearl grass , woodruff , common golden nettle , multi-flowered white root and wood violet . To settle in bases rich in bases u. a. Forest barley and forest Bingelkraut , in shady areas need to do is join Common Male Fern and Athyrium filix-femina . Orchid beech forests grow particularly in the west of the nature reserve on the steeply sloping upper slope and exposed protrusions of the Fahrenberg on warm, dry, shallow limestone sites. Dominant tree species is the beech to the face as ash, wild service tree , hornbeam , mountain, field and Norway maple join. Characteristic types of herb layer are u. a. Finger sedge , blue-green sedge , white forest bird , brown-red stendelwort , cowslip and swallowweed . In the herbaceous layer of the alluvial forests formed by alder, ash and willow, u. a. Winkelsegge , thin-spiked sedge , hairgrass and Oxlip .

The forests are the habitat of lynx , wildcat and dormouse as well as various bats , including the great mouse-eared mouse . Also, black stork and red kite are native here.
