Helmut Baur (born July 12, 1941 in Böblingen ) is a German entrepreneur and managing partner of Binder Optik GmbH.

Life

Helmut Baur is the son of the owner of a watch and jewelry store in Böblingen. After secondary school he completed training as a watchmaker and optician .

Baur passed the highly gifted high school diploma at the University of Tübingen . As a scholarship holder of the German National Academic Foundation , he studied business administration at the universities of Stuttgart , Friborg (Switzerland) and Erlangen-Nuremberg . He completed his studies with honors after six semesters as a business graduate with a subsequent doctorate . His first professional positions were the commercial management of a medium-sized eyewear manufacturer in Pforzheim and the sales management at Carl Zeiss in Aalen and Stuttgart .

On August 1, 1975, Helmut Baur and his wife Gabriele founded the first Binder optics specialist shop in Böblingen, where the company is still based today. In 2015 there were 50 Binder stores in Baden-Württemberg, Rhineland-Palatinate and Bavaria. With around 400 employees, Binder Optik achieves annual sales of 40 million euros and ranks eighth in the German optics industry. Gabriele Baur is responsible in the family business for the design of the shops, the purchasing and the design of the own collections. His son Dominic (* 1979) is responsible for sales.

Awards

For his entrepreneurial success, Helmut Baur was awarded the gold business medal of the state of Baden-Württemberg in 1990.

In 1992 he was honored with the Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon . He received the Federal Cross of Merit for his worldwide commitment to the protection of species and the conservation of endangered species. His special commitment is to the preservation of natural habitats and resources in Asia, Africa and South America. Thanks to his efforts is tortoiseshell the sea turtles prohibited in the German optical shops.

In 2000 he received the gold Staufer medal from the state of Baden-Württemberg, awarded by Minister-President Erwin Teufel . In December 2017, Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier awarded him the Cross of Merit 1st Class of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany for his outstanding services to the community and his services to Germany and its people. Honorary positions

Helmut Baur is an honorary senator and a member of the board of trustees of the Aalen University of Applied Sciences. He was also a member of the University Council for many years. For 20 years, he has donated the university award for the diploma course in optics and the part-time master’s course, which is awarded every two years. He is a board member of the scientific society for market-oriented corporate management at the Technical University of Dresden . He is a long-standing member of the Board of Trustees of the International Business School Stuttgart (SIMT). In 1985, Helmut Baur founded the Deutsche Sehhilfe Foundation with the support of Zeiss, Mercedes-Benz, Ford, Rodenstock and Essilor.

Helmut Baur has been Honorary Consul of Malaysia since 1992 and Honorary Consul General for Baden-Württemberg , Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland since 1996 . Due to his special merits for the expansion of economic relations between Germany and Malaysia, he was awarded the title of nobility Datuk by the Malaysian king, which only a few foreigners have received. From 1998 he was Vice President of the Union of Honorary Consuls of Germany for nine years.

Since 2008 he has been a board member of the Federal Association of Medium-Sized Enterprises in Berlin, where he is responsible for the federal states of Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria, as well as for the areas of foreign policy, health and university policy. His sports sponsorship is primarily aimed at popular sport , so Baur has been a member of the board of trustees of the Deutsche Sporthilfe Foundation since 2008 and supports various regional sports associations. His company Binder Optik is a main sponsor of the handball club TVB 1898 Stuttgart (Bundesliga).

Helmut Baur has also been committed to culture and the environment for years. He has long been a member of the board of trustees of the Ludwigsburg Palace Festival and a founding member of the Württemberg State Theater Foundation.

He has been an active member of the Confrérie de la Chaîne des Rôtisseurs since 1974 and was for many years a member of the Executive Committee and Vice-President of the Chaine Foundation, which promotes and further educates talented young chefs and wine waiters.
