Helmut Richter (born June 22, 1891 in Stuttgart , † April 18, 1977 in Seeheim ) was a German officer , most recently a general of the Luftwaffe's flak cartillery in World War II .

Early years and World War I

Richter came on July 5, 1911 as a cadet in the Hohenzollern Foot Artillery Regiment. 13 in Ulm , where he remained until the outbreak of the First World War also acted as a company officer. After the outbreak of war he was adjutant of the 4th Foot Artillery Brigade within this regiment until the beginning of July 1915 . After a training course at the Jüterbog foot artillery shooting school , which took place from July 6th to August 5th, 1915, Richter transferred to the replacement battalion of the Lauenburg Foot Artillery Regiment No. 20 for twelve months on August 6, 1915 . From there, Richter was posted to Marine-Kanonen-Batterie 3 on December 27, 1916 , and became its leader on January 12, 1917. Richter then held this position after the end of the war until December 30, 1918.

Weimar Republic

From December 31, 1918 to February 5, 1919 Richter continued to act initially as a company officer in the Hohenzollern foot artillery regiment No. 13 . He was then until March 10, 1919 adjutant in the experimental department of the artillery testing commission in Berlin . From there, on March 11, 1919, Richter moved to the Reichswehr Ministry as an assistant at the field weaponry , where he was assigned to procurement inspection IV 16. At the end of January 1920 Richter came to the 5th Artillery Regiment of the Reichswehr as a battery officer , where he was deployed as a department adjutant from October to December 1920.

On January 1, 1921 he was assigned to the 3rd (Prussian) Artillery Regiment , where he was also initially employed as a battery leader. From May to July 1921, Richter completed an artillery shooting course there in Grafenwöhr . On March 15, 1923, he then transferred to the staff of the 1st Division of this regiment in Schweidnitz , where he was deployed until the end of March 1925. During this time, Richter was assigned to the Reichswehr Ministry to inspect weapons and equipment from March 15 to December 31, 1923. In April 1924 Richter was installed as a captain on the staff and as a welfare officer in the V Department in Sagan , whose function he held until March 1927. Subsequently, he acted as battery chief until 1931 and transferred to the regimental staff in the course of the year. From 1932 to the end of September 1933 he then served in the staff of the V (mounted) division in his regiment and was also the senior site officer in Sprottau .

Transfer to the Air Force

On October 1, 1933, Richter's assignment to the staff of the Ludwigsburg Army Driving Department took place , and on October 1, 1934, he was appointed commander. This division, under his command, was transferred to the Air Force on April 1, 1935, at the same time as he was transferred. Richter headed the department there until the end of September 1935. Subsequently, on October 1, 1935, he was appointed department commander in Flak Regiment 3 . On October 1, 1936, he was promoted to commander of the regiment, but gave up this command again at the end of March 1937 and was transferred to the Reich Aviation Ministry. Until the end of March 1940, Richter was head of department at the Air Force Personnel Office. On April 1, 1940 Richter was appointed Higher Commander of the fortress anti-aircraft cartillery III . A forerunner of the later Air Defense Command 11 or after its renaming, the 11th Flak Division , whose commanding function Richter held uninterrupted until October 31, 1943.

Subsequently, on November 1, 1943, Richter was appointed General of the Flak Cartillery at the Southeast Air Force Command with a command post in Saloniki . In this function, he was responsible for the operational management of all flak units in this area, which consisted of the 5th Flak Division and the 19th Flak Division . On October 20, 1944, this position was converted into the General Staff of the V Flak Corps . Richter himself, led the corps until November 14, 1944, on November 15, 1944, handed over the reins to General of the Flak Cartillery Otto Wilhelm von Renz and on the same day was appointed Commanding General of the Flak Cartillery for the Commander in Chief of the Western Fortifications . Richter held this position until February 1945. After that, was department handled due to the Erdlage and judges in the Leader reserve of the High Command of the Air Force added (UCL). Richter did not take over a command until the end of the war. On May 8, 1945 he was taken prisoner of war , from which he was released in May 1947.
