Helmut Schatz (born October 8, 1937 in Eisenstadt ) is an Austrian internist and former clinic director who works in Germany .

After studying medicine in Graz and Bonn , he worked at the Karolinska Institute near Stockholm from 1963 to 1964 , then at the 2nd Medical University Clinic in Vienna until 1970 and at the University of Ulm until 1976 . As a C3 professor at the University of Gießen , he followed a call to a chair for internal medicine at the Ruhr University Bochum in 1989 , where he was director of the medical clinic of the "Berufsgenossenschaftliche Kliniken Bergmannsheil - University Clinic" . From 1996 to 2000 he was a member of the convention of the Ruhr University Bochum in the role of spokesman for the professors' group.

After retirement he settled in a practice as an internist and endocrinologist / diabetologist in Bochum down. From 2003 to 2009, Schatz organized its annual congresses as President of the Central European Diabetes Society, in 2007 on the island of Kos , in 2008 in Plovdiv and in 2009 in Salzburg . In 2009 he was elected to the board of the German Society for Endocrinology (DGE) as media spokesman and in 2012 he was re-elected for a further term until 2015. Since then he has continued to look after the DGE blog as an associated board member.

Scientific work (selection)

At the Vienna Clinic he demonstrated in animal experiments the lowering of the Long-Acting Thyroid Stimulator ( LATS ), later identified as TSH receptor antibodies , by immunosuppressive therapy in patients with Graves' disease , in Ulm he demonstrated that only on isolated islets of Langerhans from rodents the secretion but not the biosynthesis of proinsulin and insulin is stimulated by sulfonylureas , but glucagon increases both processes and a preferential secretion of newly synthesized insulin takes place. In Giessen he was able to prove that somatomedin C or insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) can be synthesized in bone tissue even in response to growth hormone stimuli.

Honors

In 1964 Schatz was awarded the Austrian Federal President's Ring of Honor (Promotio sub auspiciis Praesidentis rei publicae, Latin: doctorate under the auspices of the Federal President) , in 1976 he received the Ferdinand Bertram Prize and in 1999 the Paul Langerhans Medal of the German Diabetes Society . In 2004 Schatz was awarded the Oskar Minkowski Medal of the Medical University of Wrocław / Breslau, followed in 2007 by the Hippocrates Medal from the International Hippocrates Foundation, Kos, Greece and in 2010 the Jühling Medal from the Anna Wunderlich Ernst Jühling Foundation of Heinrich -Heine University Düsseldorf. Schatz is an honorary member of numerous international and national specialist societies. In 2010 he was awarded an honorary doctorate from the Iuliu Hațieganu Medical and Pharmaceutical University in Cluj-Napoca , Romania, and in January 2014 he was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit, First Class . In 2015 he became an honorary member of the German Society for Endocrinology and the Hungarian Diabetes Society . Also in 2015 he received the Golden Decoration of Honor for Services to the Republic of Austria .

Others

Schatz has been a member of the Catholic student association KÖStV Babenberg Graz since 1961 . He later became a member of KaV Norica Vienna .
