Henning Otto von Dewitz (born December 30, 1707 ; † August 13, 1772 in Berlin ) was a Prussian major general and chief of Hussar Regiment No. 1 .

Life

origin

He was the son of the Danish Lieutenant General Ulrich Otto von Dewitz (1671-1723) and his wife Anna Margarethe Katharina, née Countess von Wedel from the House of Wedelsburg (* 1660; † November 13, 1719 in Groß Miltzow ).

Military career

As early as 1715 he was with his father in a field camp near Stralsund . Dewitz first studied science, but then went into Prussian service . There he became a lieutenant, but that wasn't enough for him and so he moved to Saxe-Gotha . There he became a staff captain in 1734 and entered the imperial service the following year, which he left in 1735.

During the First Silesian War in 1741 he was a volunteer in the Prussian Army in Silesia. Dewitz stood out in front of the Neisse fortress in such a way that the Prussian King Friedrich II became aware of him. So he received on December 5, 1741 his own squadron in the hussar regiment "Bronikoski" and the character of a major. After the battle of Chotusitz he was appointed lieutenant colonel in May 1742 and received the order Pour le Mérite on June 13, 1742 . During the Second Silesian War , Dewitz met on April 22, 1745 at Ratibor on Austrian hussars who attacked the Prussian advance guard. During this battle he suffered a bullet in the leg, which ended the further campaign for him.

Appointed regimental commander on August 20, 1746, Dewitz was promoted to colonel in mid-September 1747 and, as head of the hussar regiment, he was the successor of Johann von Oppeln-Bronikowski , the "father of the Prussian hussars". But his wound from Ratibor continued to cause problems and so in September 1750 he asked for his departure. Dewitz dimittied on October 2, 1750 with a salary of grace and conferring the character of major general.

At first he stayed at his Gut Reverin, but in 1759 he sold it to a gentleman from Glöden and moved to Berlin. After his death, Dewitz was buried in the garrison church on August 17, 1772 .

family

He had married Auguste Henriette von Dewitz (born January 13, 1712, † May 26, 1756) in Groß Miltzow on March 9, 1731 . The daughter Christine Sophie (* December 23, 1732) emerged from the marriage.
