Henri-Géry Hers

Henri-Géry Hers , also quoted by Henri G. Hers, (* July 23, 1923 in Namur ; † December 14, 2008 in Ottignies-Louvain-la-Neuve ) was a Belgian biochemist, known for his studies of glycogen metabolism and its Diseases.

Hers obtained his medical doctorate in 1948. He then turned to research in physiology under Joseph P. Bouckaert and Christian de Duve (known for researching cell organelles such as the lysosomes ). In 1957 he became a lecturer ( Agrégé ) and in 1967 professor at the Catholic University of Leuven . In 1988 he retired.

A metabolic disease ( Hers disease ) is named after him , caused by a lack of phosphorylase formed in the liver , a glycogen storage disease , of which he also researched others such as Pompe disease . Based on these investigations, he introduced the term lysosomal storage disease in 1965 .

In 1988 he received the Wolf Prize in Medicine. In 1966 he received the Francqui Prize and in 1975 the Gairdner Foundation International Award .

He had been married to Suzanne Sonnet since 1952, with whom he had six children.
