Jeffrey Victor Ravetch (born May 3, 1951 ) is an American immunologist at Rockefeller University in New York City .

Life

Ravetch grew up in New York City . He earned a bachelor's degree in molecular biophysics and biochemistry from Donald Crothers at Yale University in New Haven , Connecticut in 1973, and a Ph.D. in 1978 from Norton Zinder and Peter Model at Rockefeller University in New York City. in molecular genetics . He completed his medical studies in 1979 at Cornell University in Ithaca , New York , with an MD (professional doctorate). As a postdoctoral fellow , Ravetch worked with Philip Leder at the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in Bethesda , Maryland . In 1996 Ravetch became a professor at Rockefeller University , where he is today (as of 2012) Theresa and Eugene M. Lang Professor of Molecular Genetics and Immunology .

Act

Ravetch's work helped shed light on how the Fc receptors act on the unchanging parts of antibodies , the Fc fragments. He was able to show how stimulating (stimulating) and inhibiting (inhibiting) Fc receptors determine the immune response . The aim of his research is to improve therapeutically used antibodies (for example in cancer immunotherapy ) or to reduce the damage caused by autoimmune diseases . Further work dealt with the genetics of Plasmodium falciparum , the causative agent of malaria .
