Yasutomi Nishizuka

Yasutomi Nishizuka ( Japanese 西 塚 泰 美 , Nishizuka Yasutomi ; born July 12, 1932 in Ashiya ; † November 4, 2004 in Kobe ) was a Japanese biochemist . He is known as the discoverer of protein kinase C .

Life

Nishizuka studied medicine at Kyōto University ( MD 1957), where he received his doctorate in 1962 ( Ph.D. ). He was a postdoctoral fellow at Rockefeller University with Fritz Lipmann . From 1962 he was a researcher at Kyoto University, where he became an assistant professor in the Faculty of Medicinal Chemistry in 1964. From 1969 until his death he was professor of biochemistry and head of the biochemical faculty of the University of Kobe , where he was also temporarily president of the university.

He was a member of the Royal Society , the French Academy of Sciences , the National Academy of Sciences , the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (1992), the Japanese Academy , the Royal Spanish Academy of Sciences and the Leopoldina .
