Anthony Pawson
Anthony James "Tony" Pawson CH (born October 18, 1952 in Maidstone , Kent ; † August 7, 2013 in Toronto , Canada ) was a British- Canadian molecular biologist . He was a professor at the Samuel Lunenfeld Research Institute at Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto and a professor at the University of Toronto . He was considered one of the favorites for the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine .
Life
Pawson earned a bachelor's degree in biochemistry from Cambridge University in Cambridge , United Kingdom in 1973 . He completed his doctoral thesis for the Imperial Cancer Research Fund with a Ph.D. in Molecular Biology from the University of London . He worked as a postdoctoral fellow at the University of California at Berkeley , California . He received his first professorship in 1981 (Assistant Professor) in the Department of Microbiology at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver , Canada , and in 1985 (Associate Professor) at the University of Toronto in Toronto . In the same year he also took on a role as a "Senior Scientist" at the Samuel Lunenfeld Research Institute there , which is affiliated with the Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto. In 1989 Pawson received a full professorship at the University of Toronto and in 1994 also took over the management of the "Molecular Biology and Cancer" department at the Samuel Lunenefeld Research Institute .
Tony Pawson died on August 7, 2013 at the age of 60, the cause of death has not been disclosed. Two years earlier, his wife, Maggie, had died of lung cancer. Pawson had two children and a stepson.
Act
Pawson has made significant contributions to the elucidation of cell communication and signal transduction . In the latter, specific binding to extracellular receptors triggers intracellular processes, for example through receptor tyrosine kinases . Blocking certain tyrosine kinases with tyrosine kinase inhibitors represents a new option in the treatment of certain cancers . Based on Pawson's identification of the SH2 domain as the prototype of the protein domain that mediates intracellular protein interactions, numerous other such domains have been identified. Pawson combined genetic , biochemical and structural analysis approaches in his research .
More recent work has looked at the proteins that regulate cell polarity in cancer cells and normal cells , including the orientation of axons .
