from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gary Bruce Ruvkun (born March 26, 1952 in Berkeley , California ) is an American geneticist and professor at Harvard University .

Ruvkun earned a bachelor's degree in biophysics from the University of California, Berkeley in 1973 and a Ph.D. in 1982 from Fred Ausubel. in biophysics from Harvard University . He had postdoctoral positions with H. Robert Horvitz at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (together with Victor Ambros ) and with Walter Gilbert at Harvard University. Since 1985 he has been professor of genetics at Harvard Medical School , first as an assistant professor, then as an associate professor and finally as a full professor.

Ruvkun has first gained groundbreaking insights into regulatory microRNA . These molecules have important functions in the control of genes in animals (including humans) and plants. The first example was let-7 , the function of which was initially researched in the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans , but which also has an important function in the development of higher organisms. Hundreds of other microRNAs have been described by Ruvkun and his group. Further work deals with RNA interference .
