Henri Lopès (born September 12, 1937 in Léopoldville , Belgian Congo , now the Democratic Republic of the Congo ) is a writer and was Prime Minister of the Republic of the Congo from 1973 to 1975 .

Early years

Lopès was born in Léopoldville, the capital of the Belgian Congo, today's Kinshasa. After attending school in Brazzaville and Bangui , he lived in Paris and Nantes from 1949 to 1965 . In 1963 he graduated from the Sorbonne , where he became a professor. He was involved in associations of African students. After his return to the Congo he was Professor of History at the l'École normal supérieure d'Afrique Centrale in Brazzaville until 1966 and then Director of Education until 1968.

Politician

He belonged to the Unity Party Parti Congolais du Travail (PCT) of President Marien Ngouabi, who had ruled since 1968, and took over the Ministry of Education in 1969. He became Foreign Minister in 1972 and Prime Minister on July 28, 1973, when the post that had been vacant since late 1969 was reinstated. His tenure ended on December 18, 1975 when he was replaced by Louis Sylvain Goma . Lopès was finance minister from 1977 to 1980 during his political career.

From 1981 he worked for UNESCO , where he was director from 1982 to 1998. In October 1998 he became ambassador to Paris with responsibility for London , Madrid , Lisbon and the Holy See .

In addition to his work as a politician and diplomat, he is a writer and is considered one of the most famous representatives of modern African literature. In 1972 he received the Grand Prix littéraire de l'Afrique noire of the Association des écrivains de langue française for his work Tribaliques . The Académie française awarded him the Grand Prix de la francophonie in 1993 . In the same year he received an honorary doctorate from the University of Paris XII and in 2002 from the University of Québec .
