The Starý Herštejn (also: Herštejn, Starý Hirštejn, German Hirschstein ) is a peak in the middle Upper Palatinate Forest .

Geographical location

Starý Herštejn is located on the Czech-German border in Okres Domažlice, about four kilometers south-east of Závist (Neid), a district of the Rybník nad Radbuzou municipality , and about six kilometers north of Nemanice (water soups). The top of Starý Herštejn lies in the area of ​​the municipality of Mnichov u Poběžovic . Its north, west and south slopes are in the territory of the municipality of Nemanice.

About two kilometers north of the summit of Starý Herštejn rises the 864 meter high Lisbon mountain (Lysá hora) . In the saddle between these two peaks, the Pivoňka rises 769 meters above sea level and flows east towards Pivoň . In the valley on the west side of Starý Herštejn the Nemanický potok flows from north to south. The rocks of Starý Herštejn consist mainly of gneiss .

The 805 m high Kleinfels (Malá skála) rises south-southeast of the Hirschstein. The Vranovské sedlo, a 756 m high mountain pass, is located between Hirschstein and Kleinfels. A narrow mountain road, which is only passable in summer and autumn, connects Vranov and Nemanice over this pass .

The ruins of the Starý Herštejn castle are located on the top of Starý Herštejn . In 1272 this castle belonged to the von Hirschstein family . The castle was destroyed at the beginning of the 16th century.

On the north side of Starý Herštejn the settlements Fuchsenhäuseln (Liščí domky), Kreuzhäusel (Křížová Huť, glassworks built in 1775) and Hirschsteinhäusel (Herštejnské Chalupy, 1705) arose. Haselberg was on the west side (also: Deutschhütten, Lískovec-Lučina, erection of a glassworks in 1713). On the east side were chapels (Kaplička). All of these former settlements have perished and are now devastation.

Since 1968, the peak and its surroundings, especially the slopes to the west, south and east, have been part of the Starý Hirštejn nature reserve.

There are many rare plants and animals in the Starý Hirštejn nature reserve. Since it cannot be reached by car, but only on an arduous walk, nature has remained relatively undisturbed. Rocks, scree and wet meadows also provide a habitat for smaller plants.

Flora

In the forest around the top of Starý Herštejn there are beeches , silver firs , mountain ash , plane trees and , more rarely, alders .

In the nature reserve on the Stary Hirštejn grow Polystichum Aculeatum , Wolfs-Eisenhut , Ordinary Goldnessel , Dark lungwort , Mercurialis perennis , Yellow Anemone , Solomon's seal , Digitalis grandiflora , wire Schmiele , Haller cress , sweet woodruff , various species of orchids , daphne and other plants.

Birds

The following birds can be found in the nature reserve: Red-breasted Flycatcher , raven , black stork , tawny owl , boreal owl , wood pigeon , stock dove , black woodpecker and other woodpecker species, Willow Warbler , Wood Warbler , Goldcrest , Fieldfare , Mistle Thrush , Robin , Great Tit , Blue Tit , Coal Tit , Treecreeper , Nuthatch , Green Finch , Buzzard , hawk and other species of birds.

More animals

The nature reserve offers refuge for leaf beetles , weevils , salamanders , earth vole , yellow-necked mouse , wood shrew , stone marten , mouflon , roe deer , fallow deer , red deer , lynx , red fox and other animal species.
