Herbert Michel

Herbert Michel (born February 14, 1934 in Düsseldorf ; † August 28, 2002 in Cologne ) was a Roman Catholic prelate .

Life

Herbert Michel entered the Collegium Albertinum after graduating from Görres-Gymnasium in Düsseldorf and studied theology and philosophy in Bonn and Freiburg im Breisgau . In 1960 he received by Cardinal Joseph Frings the priesthood . He was initially a chaplain in the parish of St. Marien in Velbert . In 1962 he became an assistant in the Archbishop's General Vicariate in Cologne. From 1964 to 1969 he studied canon law at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome . Michael was known as a pilgrim and regularly visited Fatima, Lourdes, Guadeloupe in Mexico, Aparecida in Brazil and above all Jerusalem. He was committed to the formation of priests in Brazil and was well versed in South America. He had a deep relationship with the Catholic Church in Japan, especially with Sophia University in Tokyo . Long before the fall of the Berlin Wall, he initiated an aid fund for Christians in Central and Eastern Europe. He was also considered a crisis manager for the Archdiocese of Cologne.
