Hermann Buchler (born September 16, 1815 in Trieste , † May 4, 1900 in Braunschweig ) was an Austro-German entrepreneur.

life and work

The son of the wholesale merchant David Buchler learned his father's profession in Trieste, Austria , then spent a year in the United States and then in London . There he founded the company "Hermann Buchler London" in 1842, which traded in medicinal drugs , spices and colonial goods . In 1844 Buchler was accepted into the Braunschweig Freemason lodge " Carl to the Crowned Pillar ". On a trip he met Luise Thomae (1832–1908) from Braunschweig, whom he married in 1850.

Activity in Braunschweig

Buchler moved to his wife's hometown in 1854, where he had the Buchler villa built on Petritorwall by the architect Kuhne . Buchler had been a member of the Braunschweig Chamber of Commerce since 1866 and its deputy chairman in 1879/82.

In 1857 Buchler and several friends founded the Braunschweig Sugar Refinery in the western ring area , which was operated successfully until an economic crisis in 1879/80. The reason was the dismantling of import duties on sugar. The personally liable Buchler left the company.

Quinine factory Braunschweig Buchler & Co.

In 1858 a chemical factory, the Hermann Buchler's quinine factory, was founded on Frankfurter Strasse on a former garden site . It first produced the alkaloids quinine and cocaine for pharmaceutical purposes and exported them worldwide. Thanks to successful research by the chemist Friedrich Oskar Giesel , who joined the company in 1878, the company was able to manufacture radium bromide industrially for the first time in Germany and bring it to the market after the discovery of radium . In 1899 Buchler handed over management of the factory to his son Hermann (II) Buchler (1855–1915), from whom it later passed to Walther Friedrich Theodor Buchler, husband of Käthe Buchler . After almost complete destruction in 1944 and the "rebuilding of the old location forced by the Allies", the production of radioactive isotopes that was started later resulted in the relocation of the production facility from Frankfurter Strasse to Braunschweig-Wenden ; From 1988 the old factories were demolished, in 2007 plans for a "new living and working quarter" ( "Buchler's garden" ) were published on the site. After Buchler GmbH & Co. KG (later Amersham Buchler GmbH & Co. KG ) was founded in 1971 by Buchler GmbH and The Radiochemical Center (later Amersham plc ), the company was renamed GE Healthcare Buchler GmbH & Co. KG as the German Medical Diagnostics division of GE Healthcare today.
