Career

Oberliga Süd, 1954 to 1963

Höfer joined Eintracht Frankfurt at the age of fifteen and remained loyal to the club until the end of his career in the summer of 1966, caused by a knee injury. In 1954, the former youth and amateur player made his debut in the first team, in which he should complete a total of over 300 games by 1966. On the last round match day in 1953/54 , on April 4, 1954, in the away game against Jahn Regensburg, Höfer was first used in the Oberliga Süd. In the 2-0 success he stormed the left wing and t scored in the 85th minute to make it 2-0. Eintracht moved into the final round of the 1954 German championship as runner-up in the Oberliga Süd . In the final round, which was shortened because of the World Cup in Switzerland, he was then used in May in the two group matches against 1. FC Kaiserslautern (0: 1) and 1. FC Köln (2: 3). In both games he formed the left wing of Eintracht together with Alfred Pfaff . In 1959, he celebrated the German championship in the Eintracht jersey.

In the championship season 1958/59 Höfer had played all 30 round matches and scored two goals. In the final round of the German championship, he was nominated by his coach Paul Oßwald in all seven matches. First in the six group matches against 1. FC Köln, FK Pirmasens and SV Werder Bremen (12-0 points) and then in the final on June 28, 1959 in Berlin against local rivals Kickers Offenbach. In the 5-3 success after extra time, he had the task of fighting the national player Engelbert Kraus on the right wing. In 1961 and 1962 , the strong and reliable defender came to the runner-up with the team from Riederwald. With the fourth place, Höfer ended the era of the first-class Oberliga Süd with Eintracht 1963 and his club was thus included in the newly introduced central soccer league for the 1963/64 season .

The sporting highlight for Eintracht as well as for Höfer was the competition in the European Cup in 1960 with the games against the teams from Young Boys Bern (4: 1, 1: 1), Wiener Sportclub (2: 1, 1: 1), Glasgow Rangers in the semi-finals (6: 1, 6: 3) and the final on May 18, 1960 in Glasgow's Hampden Park in front of 127,000 spectators against the four-time European Cup winner Real Madrid. Höfer was able to survive in a personal duel against Real right winger Canário , but the other attacking aces of the Madrilenians with Luis Del Sol , Alfredo Di Stefano , Ferenc Puskás and Francisco Gento decided after a game that was completely offensive on both sides, the final deserved 7: 3 for Real. Höfer had his first experiences in European football in the Messestädte-Pokal in 1955-57 in the ranks of the Frankfurt city selection against Basel (5: 1) and London (1: 0). His last appearance in the trade fair cup was the 3-0 home win on September 2, 1964 against FC Kilmarnock.

Bundesliga, 1963 to 1966

From 1963 to 1966 Höfer played with Eintracht Frankfurt in the Bundesliga and played 68 games in which he met once in the seasons 1964/65 and 1965/66. In addition to teammates such as goalkeeper Egon Loy , Dieter Lindner , Friedel Lutz , Alfred Horn , Dieter Stinka , Richard Kreß , Lothar Schämer , Erwin Stein , Wilhelm Huberts (29-18), Wolfgang Solz and Horst Trimhold , Höfer (29-0) only had in missing a league game. With a 3-1 success, he and his teammates reached the 1964 cup final against Hertha BSC on June 3, 1964 . He lost the final with Eintracht on June 13th in Stuttgart with 0-2 against Munich 1860.

The left defender played his last Bundesliga game on the 25th match day of the 1965/66 season, on March 12, 1966. Eintracht Frankfurt did not get beyond a 0-0 draw in their home game against 1. FC Köln. In the team of trainer Elek Schwartz , Peter Kunter guarded the goal and Karl-Heinz Wirth , Dieter Lindner, Peter Blusch and Höfer formed the defensive chain. A serious knee injury then ended the season for Höfer and also led to the end of his career. He had again completed 21 Bundesliga games (1 goal) and Eintracht had taken 7th place.

In total he came to 292 league games and 19 league goals for Eintracht.

He caused the first penalty in Bundesliga history.
