Hermann Schaefer (born August 30, 1848 in Ortenberg (Hesse) ; † October 21, 1932 in Darmstadt ) was a German administrative officer who worked as bailiff and mayor of the city of Herne .

Life

The son of a judge chose a military career as an active officer. In 1866 he took part in the German war against Prussia as a lieutenant in a Hessian infantry regiment and in the war against France in 1870/1871 . He was wounded twice during his military service. In 1875 he left the army as a captain and moved to local government, where he initially found employment in Münster .

On September 1, 1876, he came from Münster to what was then the new rural community of Ückendorf , where he took the position of bailiff. He married in Bessungen in 1877 , but became a widower a year later. From July 15, 1879 to April 1, 1897 he was a civil servant in the rural community of Herne in the Bochum district as the successor to Captain Karl von Bock and Polach .

During Schaefer's activity, Herne developed from a rural community into an industrial city. His declared aim was to develop the rural community of Herne into a town. During this phase, he was appointed first mayor of Herne in 1897. The population of the city, like the entire Ruhr area, increased enormously. Nine years after Schaefer's appointment as mayor, Herne left the Bochum district on July 1, 1906 as a now independent city. The following year, Schaefer retired on October 1, 1907 at the age of 59 for health reasons at his own request.
