Attractions

Evangelical village church St. Viti

The village church is a simple hall building with a tower built on to the west. The current church was rebuilt in 1736 after the previous building burned down completely due to a lightning strike in 1733. In 1958 the dilapidated onion hood was torn down and the new hood was put on. At that time the clock also disappeared, but the movement is still there. Two bells hang in the tower today. The larger one was donated by the Nebelung family from Hesserode in 1964. The origin of the smaller bell is not known. Both bells bear an inscription and replace the three previous bells that were melted down during the world wars. The bells are still rung by hand today. Structural work was carried out in 2003 to secure the tower. The interior of the church is simple, but friendly and inviting thanks to the light paintwork and the low pews. The wooden pulpit altar with its twisted columns and carvings defines the sanctuary.

A stylized dove is depicted at the top of the altar as a sign of the Holy Spirit. On both sides of the altar there are chairs that are separated from the rest of the room by wooden lattices. The organ gallery opposite the altar shows the organ's prospect. In addition, only the gaming table is still there. The pipes are now completely absent, so that an electronic instrument is currently being played. The church can accommodate 150 visitors, 40 of them on the gallery. In 1989 the church underwent extensive restoration and renovation, supported by generous donations from the Lang / Ruegg families from Winterthur / Switzerland and the partner parish of Steffenberg and Obereisenhausen as well as the Protestant-Reformed parish of Winterthur-Seen. A small plaque in the church takes this into account. The heated church is a performance location for choir concerts in winter. In a chronicle in the rectory in Hesserode, various events from community life over the past centuries were recorded. It's very interesting to learn. what things the people of the time thought worth reporting. Some of it will certainly be heard in the festival year.

In front of the church is the historical grave monument of the Nebelung family as a black obelisk.
