action

A middle-aged dentist who works in the stomatological department of the Berlin Charité has no desire to go home on a Friday after work and, as always, open the door of her family's apartment, but would like to be received once herself. So the viewer can accompany her as she leaves her work place through the main entrance on Schumannstrasse. She walks through Auguststrasse , where a West Berlin Mercedes driver asks her to have a coffee with him. But she sends him back to Friedrichstrasse , where he can more easily find the girls he is looking for. She then continues on Grosse Hamburger Strasse to the Marx-Engels-Platz S-Bahn station , where a young man asks whether they may have been together in a hospital, which she has to deny. Now it's on to the Berlin market hall on Karl-Liebknecht-Straße , where she meets a foreigner at a garden gnome who buys several gnomes and gives her one. The dentist stays here until the market hall closes. The path takes her just a few doorways to the House of Hungarian Culture, where she is invited to take part in a vernissage . After a glass of champagne, she says goodbye again, although the person in charge thinks she is a well-known painter. Everywhere on the way home she looks at people in their everyday life until she sees light in her apartment on the opposite Rathausstrasse . Now that she is no longer the first to come home, she can finally go upstairs.

The following morning, it is Saturday, the mother gets up to wake her son so that he can go to school. Of course, the trousers he wants are not yet fully repaired, so that in addition to preparing his breakfast, they also have to sew in the zipper quickly, because he does not want to wear other trousers. After the son has finally left the apartment, she can go to bed again. But since her husband can no longer sleep due to the street noise, the night's sleep is over. He notes, however, that it is imperative to continue to declare Saturday to be a school day, otherwise humanity would die out, otherwise one is never alone. Then he prepares breakfast, and it happens that the garden gnome his wife brought with him falls from the refrigerator to the floor and shatters. Now the couple can sit comfortably at the table, have breakfast and chat extensively until the son comes home from school.

production

Tonight and tomorrow morning , the Red Circle artistic working group shot a black and white film and had its premiere as part of the ad hoc series of events on March 14, 1980 in the Astra cinema in Berlin . The dramaturgy of the film was in the hands of Christel Gräf and the scenario was developed by Dietmar Hochmuth. In the opening credits, the title is only written in small letters: this evening and tomorrow morning , which causes problems with the lemma. Therefore the correct spelling is used throughout.

Although the film was commissioned by GDR television, it was never broadcast there. It was the diploma film of the director Dietmar Hochmuth, who studied from 1973 to 1979 at the State All Union Institute for Cinematography of the USSR (WGIK). In Germany, this film is considered to have disappeared, but a well-preserved copy without a Russian voiceover was discovered in the archive of the Moscow Film School in 2015 .
