history

Hickory tree

In the 1850s, some settlers from Germany settled in the area. One of them opened a small tavern under a large hickory tree ( Carya ) in a wooden house and named the place Hickory Tavern based on this tree . When the Western North Carolina Railroad , which was later incorporated into the Southern Railway , reached the place in 1859 , more settlers settled. In 1873 the place name was officially changed to Hickory. Because of the abundance of forests in the area with many high-quality woods, a center for furniture production was soon established. During the Second World War , many furniture factories also made wooden boxes for packing ammunition and other war materials. By 1961, 46 furniture factories, several sawmills and a few textile processing companies had been established. First and foremost, high quality furniture and golf clubs for hickory golf were produced.

Today, Hickory continues to be one of the leading furniture hubs in the United States, and some of the furniture factories have been manufacturing on their original factory premises for over a hundred years. The manufacture of fiber optic cables is becoming increasingly important as a new line of business . The place was recognized by Reader's Digest magazine as a residential area with a high quality of life and exceptional opportunities for education and family life. Hickory was awarded the All-America City Award and named All-America City by the National Civic League in 1967, 1987 and 2007 . The award is presented annually to only ten cities in the United States and recognizes a community's ability to work together as an example to solve critical local problems. From a sporting point of view, the Hickory Motor Speedway is a magnet for touring car racing , where races of the NASCAR series are held every year .

A variety of historic buildings and places from the early days of the place are listed on the National Register of Historic Places , including the Elliott Carnegie Library , Claremont High School Historic District and Hickory Municipal Building, as well as a number of wealthy citizen homes.
