Vegetative characteristics

Hieracium longipilum is a perennial herbaceous plant that reaches heights of 30 to 75 centimeters, occasionally up to 200 centimeters. The stems are usually covered with fine and rough 0.3 to 1.5 centimeter long hair, occasionally also star-shaped and have a rough hairy base.

At the base of the stem there are three to eight, occasionally more basal leaves , while there are three to twelve or more leaves on the stem. The leaf blade is at a length from 4.5 to 25 centimeters and a width from 1.2 to 4 centimeters-oblanceolate with wedge-shaped Spreitenbasis and round or tapered Spreitenspitze. The margins of the spread are whole. The underside of the leaf, like the upper side of the leaf, is covered with 0.3 to 0.8 centimeters long, fine and rough hair.

Generative characteristics

The flowering period extends from July to September. The paniculate to almost racemose total inflorescence usually contains 10 to 20 or more cup-shaped partial inflorescences. The inflorescence shaft is covered with star-like as well as with glandular and stalked, occasionally fine and rough hair. With a diameter of 0.6 to 1 centimeter, the bell-shaped involucre contains 12 to 21, sometimes more on the underside, glandular and star-like hairy bracts with pointed tips. The flower heads contain 30 to 60 ray florets. The yellow ray florets are around 0.7 inches long.

The achenes are jug-shaped with a length of 0.3 to 0.4 centimeters. The pappus consists of 35 to 40 or more straw-colored or dirty white bristle hairs, which are 0.55 to 0.65 inches long.

Occurrence

The natural range of Hieracium longipilum is in eastern and central North America. In the United States, it includes the states of Arkansas , Illinois , Indiana , Iowa , Kansas , Kentucky , Louisiana , Michigan , Minnesota , Nebraska , Ohio , Oklahoma , Tennessee , Texas and Wisconsin . In Canada, the range includes the province of Ontario , while the occurrences in Québec may have been extinct.

Hieracium longipilum thrives at altitudes of 100 to 400 meters where it grows in fields and on the prairie as well as along paths.

Taxonomy

It was first described as Hieracium longipilum in 1833 by John Torrey in William Jackson Hooker's Flora Boreali-Americana , Volume 1, page 298.
