Hilbersdorf is a district of the Saxon community Vierkirchen in the central part of the district of Görlitz .

geography

Hilbersdorf is located west-southwest of the Königshain Mountains , through which the highway tunnel of the same name with the federal highway 4 (section Bautzen - Görlitz ) runs.

The Waldhufendorf lies in the valley of the trout stream and merges directly with the neighboring town of Arnsdorf in the north . Other surrounding villages are Königshain in the east, the Reichenbacher districts Mengelsdorf and Biesig in the south and Dittmannsdorf and Krobnitz in the southwest, and in the west the Vierkirchen districts Döbschütz and Melaune .

history

Hilbersdorff was first mentioned in a document in 1419, around half a century after Arnoldisdorf , neighboring to the north , where Hilbersdorf is also parish. The name and the shape as a Waldhufendorf suggest a German settlement. In the late 16th century, the Sorbian-German language border ran just west of Hilbersdorf in Meuselwitz and Krobnitz already Sorbian spoken.

The manor rose to the largest landowner in the village in the 17th and 18th centuries by laying farmers and in the middle of the 19th century owned two thirds of the district. Hilbersdorf came under the rule of Arnsdorf as early as the end of the 18th century. The two villages were to remain together as a manorial until the land reform after the Second World War .

Due to the land reform, the manor was expropriated and the land was divided among 41 people. Unallocated areas were farmed together with the manor as a state-owned property .

Since 1970 Arnsdorf and Hilbersdorf have formed the municipality of Arnsdorf-Hilbersdorf . In the same year, the still active quarries in both parts of the community were closed. The Görlitzer Kreisbahn , which had also passed through Hilbersdorf since 1904, was discontinued in 1972. After the fall of the Wall , granite mining resumed.

The communities of Arnsdorf-Hilbersdorf, Buchholz and Melaune, which were affected by population decline, merged on January 1, 1994 to form the community of Vierkirchen.

By landlords royal Bauernlegen the number of farmers decreased by 9 in the 17th century just in time to its place until the 19th century, however, disappeared a year 1777th In addition, in 1777 at the Landesexamination 18 were gardeners and 8 cottagers for Hilbersdorf reported. Some of the gardeners and cottagers found work in the quarries around Arnsdorf, Hilbersdorf and Königshain.

The population increased in the second half of the 19th century from 285 in 1871 to 327 in 1885. This was followed by a decline, so that by 1905 the population was only 276. This level did not change until the Second World War.

After the war ended, refugees and displaced persons were taken in and land was given away. As a result, the number of inhabitants rose permanently by over 100 to almost 400 for a few years. As early as the mid-sixties, as in neighboring Arnsdorf, there was a sharp decline. This trend continued after the congregation in Arnsdorf-Hilbersdorf .

Around the turn of the millennium, Hilbersdorf had around 220 inhabitants.

Place name

Forms of the place name mentioned in documents include Hilbersdorff (1419), Hilbrißdorff (1486), Hilbirsdorf (1543) and finally Hilbersdorf (1768).

The place name denotes a village belonging to Hildebert, Hildebrand or similar. The type of settlement suggests that the person in question was the locator of the German settlers.
