As Mountain Research , outdated Orologie , the exploration of the mountains of the earth's surface called. It examines mountain regions both globally and in terms of regularities ( typological or nomothetic ), as well as on a regional scale with the aim of a synthetic- integrative perspective ( idiographical ). Mountain research is carried out in the natural sciences , the humanities and social sciences and therefore combines a wide variety of disciplines and thus represents an interdisciplinary field of research.

As an applied research direction, it serves, among other things, the sustainable development of the mountain environment (e.g. settlement , transport , economy , environment ). In relation to the exploration of the high mountains in the narrower sense, one also speaks of high mountain research .
