Hohenau is a city and district in the Itapúa department in Paraguay . It is located 8 kilometers from Trinidad , 35 km from Encarnación and 365 kilometers from the capital Asunción . It is a little higher than the Río Paraná . The city name is composed of the words "high" and Au .

history

The city was founded on March 14, 1900 by Guillermo Closs , Carlos Reverchon , Ambrosio Scholler and Esteban Scholler with the help of German colonists.

The German-born Guillermo or Wilhelm Closs was born on October 31, 1841 in Baumschneis, Brazil (today: Dois Irmãos ). In the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul , he founded a place called Serra Pelada . He later decided to move to Paraguay where he met Carlos Reverchon. Together they drew up a plan for settlement by German immigrants.

economy

40% of the population work in agriculture, 60% in industry and trade. Agriculture is favored by the subtropical climate and abundant water resources. Cotton , beans , peanuts , wood oil trees , maize , cassava , mate bushes , soybeans , sorghum and watermelons are grown , and cows , pigs and poultry are kept on animals .

Educational institutions

In the city is the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences of the Universidad Católica Nuestra Señora de la Asunción . There is also a dance school, a cooking school, a school for tailors , a school for barbers and schools for computer science, as well as several comprehensive schools, including the Colegio Paraguayo Germano .

tourism

A local attraction is the Alto Paraná Hunting and Fishing Club . Traditional fishing takes place here.

There are German and Japanese colonies, where the visitor can discover the architectural features, the typical food and the cultivation of the respective country.
