Geographical location and description

The Hohe Stein is located in the Weismain-Alb , a northern branch of the Franconian Alb . The dominance of the Hohen Stein to the next higher mountain, the eastern flank of the Foststall hill, south of Köttel , is 1.95 km. In addition to the main summit, there are three smaller secondary summits with 508  m above sea level. NHN , 504  m above sea level NHN and 503  m above sea level To make out NHN . The mountain falls relatively flat onto the plateau around Mosenberg and Frankenberg , over which it rises around 20 m and 50 m respectively. The plateau itself is bounded by the Köttler Grund in the southwest and south, the Kleinziegenfelder valley in the southeast, the Weismaintal in the east and northeast and the Schöpfleinsgrabental in the north. To the west there is no serious drop in the plateau, which therefore connects to the rest of the high plateau of the Franconian Jura at this point.

geology

The Hohe Stein consists mainly of the lithostratigraphic groups of the White Jura of the South German Jura . The structure is largely symmetrical.

From the middle slopes of the Kleinziegenfelder valley , above the Oxfordium level of the Brown Jura, it begins at around 400  m above sea level. NHN . the 50 m thick lower Kimmeridgian layer (syn. Weißjura γ), also known as upper marl limestone . It is a clayey layer of marl in which occasionally larger limestone banks or lumpy limestone deposits occur. A clear demarcation to the next younger layer, the Middle Kimmeridgian layer (syn. White Jurassic δ), is hardly possible because the transition is fluid. It consists mainly of mass limestone and sponge limestone and, like the White Jurassic layers underneath, contains numerous fossils such as silicified sponges , trochite rubble limestone and mussels . The summit area of the Hohe Steins consists of this rock layer.

Flora and fauna

The Hohe Stein is almost completely covered with mixed forest, with spruce , Scots pine , oak , linden and red beech as the dominant species. The fauna around the Hohe Stein does not differ very much from that of other areas with mixed forests and open areas in the Franconian Alb. So there are from insects and vertebrates on small mammals up to singing birds , birds of prey and larger mammals such as red and black game numerous ways.

Landscape protection

The High Stone is located in the northern part of, 1,021.64 km², founded in 2001 Nature Preserve Nature Park Franconian Switzerland Veldenstein Forest (LSG no. 322697).
